Jeremiah 14
1 This is the LORD’s word that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:
Parole de l'Éternel qui fut adressée à Jérémie à l'occasion des sécheresses.
2 “Judah mourns, and its gates languish. They sit in black on the ground. The cry of Jerusalem goes up.
Juda est dans le deuil, et ses villes sont tombées en langueur, la tristesse les terrasse, et les cris de Jérusalem s'élèvent.
3 Their nobles send their little ones to the waters. They come to the cisterns, and find no water. They return with their vessels empty. They are disappointed and confounded, and cover their heads.
Et les grands envoient les petits aux eaux: ils arrivent aux citernes, ne trouvent point d'eau; ils retournent avec des vases vides, confus et honteux ils se couvrent la tête.
4 Because of the ground which is cracked, because no rain has been in the land, the plowmen are disappointed. They cover their heads.
A la vue du pays consterné parce qu'il ne tombe point de pluie sur la terre, les laboureurs sont confondus, ils se couvrent la tête.
5 Yes, the doe in the field also calves and forsakes her young, because there is no grass.
Oui, même la biche dans les campagnes met bas, puis déserte, parce qu'il n'y a point d'herbe.
6 The wild donkeys stand on the bare heights. They pant for air like jackals. Their eyes fail, because there is no vegetation.
Et les onagres sont là sur les collines, aspirant l'air comme des chacals, leur regard est éteint, parce qu'il n'y a point de verdure.
7 Though our iniquities testify against us, work for your name’s sake, LORD; for our rebellions are many. We have sinned against you.
Quoique nos péchés témoignent contre nous, agis, ô Éternel, pour l'amour de ton nom; car nos défections sont nombreuses, nous avons péché contre toi.
8 You hope of Israel, its Savior in the time of trouble, why should you be as a foreigner in the land, and as a wayfaring man who turns aside to stay for a night?
Espoir d'Israël, toi, son aide au moment de la détresse, pourquoi serais-tu comme un étranger dans le pays, et comme un voyageur qui campe pour une nuit?
9 Why should you be like a scared man, as a mighty man who cannot save? Yet you, LORD, are in the middle of us, and we are called by your name. Do not leave us.
Pourquoi serais-tu comme un homme éperdu, comme un héros impuissant pour aider? Cependant tu es au milieu de nous, Éternel, et de ton nom nous sommes appelés; ne nous abandonne pas!
10 The LORD says to this people: “Even so they have loved to wander. They have not restrained their feet. Therefore the LORD does not accept them. Now he will remember their iniquity, and punish them for their sins.”
Ainsi parle l'Éternel à ce peuple: C'est ainsi qu'ils aiment à errer çà et là, sans contenir leurs allures. C'est pourquoi l'Éternel ne prend point plaisir à eux; Il se souvient à cette heure de leur crime, et Il châtie leur péché.
11 The LORD said to me, “Do not pray for this people for their good.
Et l'Éternel me dit: Ne prie pas en faveur de ce peuple, pour son bien.
12 When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and meal offering, I will not accept them; but I will consume them by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.”
S'ils jeûnent, je n'écouterai pas leurs requêtes, et s'ils m'offrent des holocaustes et des oblations, je ne les agréerai point, car je veux les détruire par l'épée, par la famine et par la peste.
13 Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, the prophets tell them, ‘You will not see the sword, neither will you have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.’”
Et je dis: Ah! Seigneur, Éternel, voici, ce sont les prophètes qui leur disent: Vous ne verrez point d'épée, et vous n'aurez point de famine, mais Je vous donnerai un bonheur assuré dans ce lieu.
14 Then the LORD said to me, “The prophets prophesy lies in my name. I did not send them. I did not command them. I did not speak to them. They prophesy to you a lying vision, divination, and a thing of nothing, and the deceit of their own heart.
Et l'Éternel me dit: C'est le mensonge que ces prophètes prophétisent en mon nom, je ne les ai point envoyés, je ne leur ai adressé ni mes ordres, ni ma parole; menteuses visions, et divination, et vanité et illusions de leur cœur, c'est ce qu'ils vous prophétisent.
15 Therefore the LORD says concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, but I did not send them, yet they say, ‘Sword and famine will not be in this land.’ Those prophets will be consumed by sword and famine.
Aussi l'Éternel prononce ainsi sur ces prophètes qui prophétisent en mon nom, sans que je les aie envoyés, et qui disent: Il n'y aura ni épée, ni famine en ce pays: Par l'épée et par la famine ces prophètes périront.
16 The people to whom they prophesy will be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword. They will have no one to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, or their daughters, for I will pour their wickedness on them.
Et ceux auxquels ils prophétisent seront étendus dans les rues de Jérusalem par la famine et par l'épée, et personne ne leur donnera la sépulture ni à eux, ni à leurs femmes, ni à leurs fils, ni à leurs filles; et je reverserai sur eux leur méchanceté.
17 “You shall say this word to them: “‘Let my eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease; for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous wound.
Et dis-leur encore cette parole: La nuit et le jour des larmes coulent de mes yeux, et elles ne s'arrêtent pas, car la vierge, fille de mon peuple, a été frappée d'un grand coup, d'une plaie très douloureuse.
18 If I go out into the field, then behold, the slain with the sword! If I enter into the city, then behold, those who are sick with famine! For both the prophet and the priest go about in the land, and have no knowledge.’”
Si je sors dans les champs, ce sont des hommes percés par l'épée, et si j'entre dans la ville, ce sont des gens amaigris par la faim, car et prophètes et sacrificateurs circulent dans le pays, et ils ne savent que faire.
19 Have you utterly rejected Judah? Has your soul loathed Zion? Why have you struck us, and there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!
As-tu donc rejeté Juda, et as-tu pris Sion en dégoût? Pourquoi nous as-tu frappés d'un coup sans remède? Nous attendions le salut, mais il ne vient rien de bon; le temps de la guérison, et voici l'épouvante!
20 We acknowledge, LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against you.
Éternel, nous connaissons notre méchanceté, la faute de nos pères; car nous avons péché contre toi.
21 Do not abhor us, for your name’s sake. Do not disgrace the throne of your glory. Remember, and do not break your covenant with us.
Pour l'amour de ton nom, ne rejette pas, ne profane pas le trône de ta majesté; rappelle-toi, ne romps pas ton alliance avec nous!
22 Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain? Or can the sky give showers? Are not you he, the LORD our God? Therefore we will wait for you; for you have made all these things.
Parmi les idoles des nations en est-il qui donnent la pluie? ou le ciel a-t-il le pouvoir de répandre la rosée? N'est-ce pas toi, Éternel, notre Dieu? Et nous espérons en toi, car c'est toi qui as créé toutes ces choses.
