2 Corinthians 8
1 And so we are making known to you, brothers, the grace of God that has been given in the churches of Macedonia.
En wij maken u bekend, broeders, de genade Gods die gegeven is in de gemeenten van Macedonië,
2 For within a great experience of tribulation, they have had an abundance of joy, and their profound poverty has only increased the richness of their simplicity.
hoe dat te midden van veel beproeving en verdrukking, de overvloed hunner blijdschap en hun zeer diepe armoede, heeft uitgeblonken in den rijkdom hunner milddadigheid.
3 And I bear witness to them, that they were willing to accept what was in accord with their ability, and even what was beyond their ability.
Want ik getuig dat zij naar vermogen, ja boven vermogen gewillig waren,
4 For they were begging us, with great exhortation, for the grace and the communication of the ministry that is with the saints.
met veel aandrang ons smeekende om de gunst van ook deel te mogen hebben; aan dezen dienst jegens de heiligen.
5 And this is beyond what we had hoped, since they gave themselves, first of all to the Lord, and then also to us, through the will of God,
En dat niet alleen, zooals wij gehoopt hadden, maar ze gaven zich zelven eerst aan den Heere en aan ons! door den wil van God.
6 so much so that we petitioned Titus, that in the same manner as he had begun, he would also complete in you this same grace.
Daarom hebben wij Titus verzocht om deze gunst ook, aan ulieden te volbrengen, zooals hij te voren begonnen was.
7 But, just as in all things you abound in faith and in word and in knowledge and in all solicitude, and even more so in your charity toward us, so also may you abound in this grace.
Maar gelijk gij overvloedig zijt in alles, in geloof, en woord, en kennis, en allen ijver, en in uw liefde jegens ons, zoo moet gij ook in deze gunst overvloedig zijn.
8 I am speaking, not commanding. But through the solicitude of others, I approve of the good character of your charity.
Ik zeg dit niet als gebiedende, maar als om door den ijver van anderen ook de oprechtheid uwer liefde te beproeven.
9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, he became poor for your sakes, so that through his poverty, you might become rich.
Want gij kent de genade van onzen Heere Jezus Christus, dat Hij, rijk zijnde, arm geworden is om uwentwille, opdat gij door zijn armoede zoudt rijk worden.
10 And about this, I give my counsel. For this is useful to those of you who, only a year earlier, had just begun to act, or even to be willing to act.
En in dezen geef ik mijn gedachte. Want dit is ulieden tot nuttigheid, die niet alleen het doen maar het willen al een jaar geleden begonnen zijt.
11 So, truly now, accomplish this in deed, so that, in the same manner as your willing mind is prompted, you may also act, out of that which you have.
Maar volbrengt nu ook het doen, opdat er een uitvoering gegeven worde aan hetgeen gij wilt, zooals gij ook de begeerte hadt om te willen.
12 For when the will is prompted, it receives according to what that person has, not according to what that person does not have.
Want als eerst de begeerte daar is, dan is zij aangenaam naar hetgeen iemand heeft, niet naar hetgeen hij niet heeft.
13 And it is not that others should be relieved, while you are troubled, but that there should be an equality.
Want ik zeg dit niet om anderen te verlichten en u te bezwaren, maar opdat er gelijkheid zij.
14 In this present time, let your abundance supply their need, so that their abundance may also supply your need, in order that there may be an equality, just as it was written:
Uw overvloed toch in dezen tegenwoordigen tijd is tot hun hulp, opdat ook hun overvloed eens u tot hulp zij; opdat er gelijkheid zij;
15 “He with more did not have too much; and he with less did not have too little.”
zooals er geschreven is: hij die veel verzamelde had geen overvloed en hij die weinig verzamelde kwam niet te kort.
16 But thanks be to God, who has granted to the heart of Titus, this same solicitude for you.
Gode nu zij dank, die denzelfden ijver voor u gegeven heeft in het hart van Titus,
17 For certainly, he accepted the exhortation. But since he was more solicitous, he went to you of his own free will.
dat hij het verzoek heeft ingewilligd; zelfs was hij zeer ijverig en gewillig om tot u te gaan.
18 And we have even sent with him a brother whose praise accompanies the Gospel throughout all the churches.
Wij hebben dan met hem gezonden den broeder, die in het Evangelie vermaard is door al de gemeenten.
19 And not only that, but he was also chosen by the churches to be a companion for our sojourn in this grace, which is ministered by us with our determined will, to the glory of the Lord.
En dit niet alleen, maar hij is ook verkozen door de gemeenten om met ons te reizen met deze gave, die van ons bezorgd is tot de heerlijkheid des Heeren zelven en tot betooning van onze bereidvaardigheid.
20 So let us avoid this, lest anyone disparage us over the abundance that is ministered by us.
Want wij zoeken te vermijden dat iemand ons zou lasteren in deze groote som die van ons bezorgd wordt.
21 For we provide for what is good, not only in the sight of God, but also in the sight of men.
Want wij betrachten het goede, niet alleen voor het aangezicht des Heeren, maar ook voor het aangezicht der menschen.
22 And we have also sent with them our brother, whom we have proven to be frequently solicitous in many matters. But now there is a greater solicitousness, which is greatly entrusted to you;
Wij hebben dan met hen onzen broeder gezonden, dien wij in vele dingen dikwijls getrouw bevonden hebben, doch nu nog veel getrouwer vanwege het groot vertrouwen in u.
23 and whether it concerns Titus, who is a companion to me and a helper to you, or whether it concerns our brothers, the Apostles of the churches, it is to the glory of Christ.
Als iemand naar Titus onderzoek doet, hij is mijn medgezel en medearbeider bij u; of naar onze andere broeders, zij zijn afgezanten der gemeenten, een glorie van Christus.
24 Therefore, in the sight of the churches, show them the proof of your charity and of our glorying about you.
Geeft hun dan een bewijs uwer liefde en van onzen roem ten uwen behoeve voor het aangezicht der gemeenten.
