Acts 28
1 And when we got safe [to land] we then knew that the island was called Melita.
Et, quand nous nous fûmes tirés d'affaire, nous reconnûmes que l'île s'appelait Malte;
2 But the barbarians shewed us no common kindness; for, having kindled a fire, they took us all in because of the rain that was falling and because of the cold.
et les barbares nous montrèrent une humanité plus qu'ordinaire; car, ayant allumé un feu, ils nous en firent tous approcher à cause de la pluie qui était tout à coup survenue, et à cause du froid.
3 And Paul having gathered a [certain] quantity of sticks together in a bundle and laid [it] on the fire, a viper coming out from the heat seized his hand.
Or Paul ayant saisi un paquet de broussailles et l'ayant mis dans le feu, la chaleur en fit sortir une vipère qui s'attacha à sa main;
4 And when the barbarians saw the beast hanging from his hand, they said to one another, This man is certainly a murderer, whom, [though] saved out of the sea, Nemesis has not allowed to live.
mais, lorsque les barbares virent l'animal suspendu à sa main, ils se dirent entre eux: « Certainement cet homme est un meurtrier que la Justice n'a pas voulu laissé vivre, après qu'il est sorti de la mer sain et sauf. »
5 He however, having shaken off the beast into the fire, felt no harm.
Quant à lui, ayant secoué l'animal dans le feu, il ne ressentait aucun mal,
6 But they expected that he would have swollen or fallen down suddenly dead. But when they had expected a long time and saw nothing unusual happen to him, changing their opinion, they said he was a god.
tandis que ces gens s'attendaient à ce qu'il enflerait ou tomberait mort incontinent. Mais, après avoir longtemps attendu, voyant qu'il ne lui arrivait aucun mal, ils changèrent d'opinion et dirent que c'était un dieu.
7 Now in the country surrounding that place were the lands belonging to the chief man of the island, by name Publius, who received us and gave [us] hospitality three days in a very friendly way.
Or, dans les environs de ce lieu-là se trouvaient des propriétés appartenant au premier personnage de l'île, appelé Poplius, qui nous fit un bon accueil et nous hébergea amicalement pendant trois jours.
8 And it happened that the father of Publius lay ill of fever and dysentery; to whom Paul entered in, and having prayed and laid his hands on him cured him.
Or il advint que le père de Poplius était retenu au lit par des accès de fièvre et par une dyssenterie; Paul, s'étant rendu auprès de lui, lui imposa les mains après avoir prié et le guérit;
9 But this having taken place, the rest also who had sicknesses in the island came and were healed:
là-dessus tous ceux qui, dans l'île, avaient des infirmités accoururent, et ils étaient guéris;
10 who also honoured us with many honours, and on our leaving they made presents to us of what should minister to our wants.
ils nous rendirent aussi toute sorte d'honneurs, et, quand nous partîmes, ils nous fournirent ce dont nous avions besoin.
11 And after three months we sailed in a ship which had wintered in the island, an Alexandrian, with [the] Dioscuri for its ensign.
Ce fut au bout de trois mois que nous partîmes sur un navire d'Alexandrie qui avait hiverné dans l'île et qui portait le signe des Dioscures.
12 And having come to Syracuse we remained three days.
Arrivés à Syracuse, nous y restâmes trois jours;
13 Whence, going in a circuitous course, we arrived at Rhegium; and after one day, the wind having changed to south, on the second day we came to Puteoli,
et de là, rangeant la côte, nous vînmes à Rhegio. Le lendemain, un vent du sud s'étant levé, nous arrivâmes en deux jours à Pouzzoles,
14 where, having found brethren, we were begged to stay with them seven days. And thus we went to Rome.
où nous trouvâmes des frères qui nous pressèrent de rester avec eux sept jours, et c'est ainsi que nous arrivâmes à Rome.
15 And thence the brethren, having heard about us, came to meet us as far as Appii Forum and Tres Tabernae, whom when Paul saw, he thanked God and took courage.
De cette dernière ville vinrent à notre rencontre, jusques au Forum d'Appius et aux Trois-Tavernes, des frères qui avaient entendu parler de nous; leur vue fut pour Paul une occasion de rendre grâces à Dieu et de prendre courage.
16 And when we came to Rome, [the centurion delivered up the prisoners to the praetorian prefect, but] Paul was allowed to remain by himself with the soldier who kept him.
Lorsque nous fûmes entrés dans Rome, on permit à Paul de demeurer seul avec le soldat qui le gardait.
17 And it came to pass after three days, that he called together those who were the chief of the Jews; and when they had come together he said to them, Brethren, I having done nothing against the people or the customs of our forefathers, have been delivered a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,
Cependant, au bout de trois jours, il convoqua les principaux des Juifs, et, quand ils furent réunis, il leur dit: « Frères, moi qui n'avais commis aucun crime, ni contre le peuple, ni contre les coutumes de nos pères, on m'a, de Jérusalem, livré comme prisonnier entre les mains des Romains,
18 who having examined me were minded to let me go, because there was nothing worthy of death in me.
qui, après m'avoir interrogé, voulaient m'élargir parce qu'il n'y avait rien en moi qui méritât la mort;
19 But the Jews speaking against it, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not as having anything to accuse my nation of.
mais, les Juifs s'y étant opposés, j'ai été forcé d'en appeler à l'empereur, sans avoir toutefois l'intention de porter aucune plainte contre ma nation.
20 For this cause therefore I have called you to [me] to see and to speak to you; for on account of the hope of Israel I have this chain about me.
C'est pourquoi donc je vous ai mandés afin de vous voir et de vous parler, car c'est à cause de l'espérance d'Israël que je porte cette chaîne. »
21 And they said to him, For our part, we have neither received letters from Judaea concerning thee, nor has any one of the brethren who has arrived reported or said anything evil concerning thee.
Mais ils lui dirent: « Nous n'avons reçu à ton sujet aucune lettre de Judée, et il n'est venu aucun frère qui ait transmis sur ton compte un rapport ou un bruit défavorable;
22 But we beg to hear of thee what thou thinkest, for as concerning this sect it is known to us that it is everywhere spoken against.
mais nous désirons apprendre de toi quelles sont tes opinions, car, quant à cette secte, nous savons qu'elle est partout contredite. »
23 And having appointed him a day many came to him to the lodging, to whom he expounded, testifying of the kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and the prophets, from early morning to evening.
Ayant pris jour avec lui, ils se rendirent en plus grand nombre auprès de lui dans la maison de son hôte, et, du matin jusqu'au soir, il leur exposait, en rendant témoignage, le royaume de Dieu, cherchant à les persuader, d'après la loi de Moïse et les prophètes, de ce qui concerne Jésus.
24 And some were persuaded of the things which were said, but some disbelieved.
Et les uns se laissaient convaincre par ses paroles, tandis que les autres demeuraient incrédules.
25 And being disagreed among themselves they left; Paul having spoken one word, Well spoke the Holy Spirit through Esaias the prophet to our fathers,
Comme ils étaient en désaccord entre eux, ils se séparèrent, après que Paul eut cité une seule autorité: « L'esprit saint a admirablement parlé par Ésaïe le prophète à vos pères, lorsqu'il dit:
26 saying, Go to this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear and not understand, and seeing ye shall see and not perceive.
Va vers ce peuple, et dis: Vous entendrez par l'ouïe et vous ne comprendrez certainement pas, et en voyant vous verrez et vous n'apercevrez certainement pas,
27 For the heart of this people has become fat, and they hear heavily with their ears, and they have closed their eyes; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.
car le cœur de ce peuple s'est épaissi, et ils ont difficilement ouï avec les oreilles, et ils ont fermé leurs yeux; de peur qu'ils ne voient avec les yeux et qu'ils n'entendent avec les oreilles, et qu'ils ne comprennent avec le cœur, et qu'ils ne se convertissent, et Je les guérirai.
28 Be it known to you therefore, that this salvation of God has been sent to the nations; they also will hear [it].
Sachez donc que ce salut de Dieu a été envoyé aux Gentils; pour eux, certes, ils l'écouteront. »
29 [And he having said this, the Jews went away, having great reasoning among themselves.]
[Et quand il eut ainsi parlé, les Juifs s'en allèrent en ayant entre eux une vive discussion.]
30 And he remained two whole years in his own hired lodging, and received all who came to him,
Or, il resta deux années entières dans son logement à lui, et il recevait tous ceux qui venaient le voir,
31 preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ, with all freedom unhinderedly.
prêchant le royaume de Dieu et enseignant, avec une pleine assurance, ce qui concernait le seigneur Jésus-Christ, sans qu'on l'en empêchât.
