Ezekiel 31

1 And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, in the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying:

Et la onzième année, le troisième mois, le premier jour du mois, la parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée en ces mots:

2 'Son of man, say unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his multitude: whom art thou like in thy greatness?

Fils de l'homme, dis à Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, et à son peuple: A qui ressembles-tu dans ta grandeur?

3 Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon, with fair branches, and with a shadowing shroud, and of a high stature; and its top was among the thick boughs.

Vois, Assur était un cèdre sur le Liban, beau par sa ramure, arbre touffu donnant un ombrage, et d'une tige élevée, et sa cime était entourée de feuillage.

4 The waters nourished it, the deep made it to grow; her rivers ran round about her plantation, and she sent out her conduits unto all the trees of the field.

Les eaux le faisaient grandir, et les flots croître en hauteur, dans leurs courants elles embrassaient son sol, et envoyaient leurs canaux à tous les arbres de la campagne.

5 Therefore its stature was exalted above all the trees of the field; and its boughs were multiplied, and its branches became long, because of the multitude of waters, when it shot them forth.

Aussi sa taille était-elle plus élevée que celle de tous les arbres de la campagne, et dans son développement, ses branches grossirent et ses rameaux s'allongèrent par l'abondance des eaux.

6 All the fowls of heaven made their nests in its boughs, and all the beasts of the field did bring forth their young under its branches, and under its shadow dwelt all great nations.

Sur ses branches nichaient tous les oiseaux des Cieux, et sous ses rameaux toutes les bêtes des champs venaient mettre bas, et tous les grands peuples habitaient à son ombre.

7 Thus was it fair in its greatness, in the length of its branches; for its root was by many waters.

Il était beau dans sa grandeur, dans la longueur de ses branches, car ses racines touchaient aux abondantes eaux.

8 The cedars in the garden of God could not hide it; the cypress-trees were not like its boughs, and the plane-trees were not as its branches; nor was any tree in the garden of God like unto it in its beauty.

Les autres cèdres ne l'effaçaient point dans le jardin de Dieu; les cyprès n'égalaient point ses rameaux, ni les platanes ses branches; nul arbre dans le jardin de Dieu n'était son pareil en beauté.

9 I made it fair by the multitude of its branches; so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied it.

Je l'avais embelli par le nombre de ses rameaux, et tous les arbres d'Éden, dans le jardin de Dieu, lui portaient envie.

10 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: Because thou art exalted in stature, and he hath set his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height;

Aussi ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Parce qu'il avait une taille élevée, et qu'il portait sa cime au milieu d'un épais feuillage, et que son cœur s'est enorgueilli de son élévation;

11 I do even deliver him into the hand of the mighty one of the nations; he shall surely deal with him; I do drive him out according to his wickedness.

je l'ai livré aux mains du héros des nations pour qu'il le traite [à son gré]: c'est pour son impiété que je l'ai expulsé;

12 And strangers, the terrible of the nations, do cut him off, and cast him down; upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs lie broken in all the channels of the land; and all the peoples of the earth do go down from his shadow, and do leave him.

et il a été arraché par des étrangers les plus violents des peuples, qui l'ont jeté; sur les montagnes et dans toutes les vallées ses rameaux sont tombés, et ses branches ont été mises en pièces dans tous les vallons du pays, et tous les peuples de la terre se sont retirés de son ombrage, et l'ont laissé là.

13 Upon his carcass all the fowls of the heaven do dwell, and upon his branches are all the beasts of the field;

Sur son tronc mutilé se posent tous les oiseaux des Cieux, et toutes les bêtes des champs sont sur ses branches.

14 to the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves in their stature, neither set their top among the thick boughs, nor that their mighty ones stand up in their height, even all that drink water; for they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.

Et c'est afin que tous les arbres voisins des eaux ne s'enorgueillissent pas de leur taille élevée, et ne dressent pas leur cime au milieu d'un épais feuillage, afin que tous les chênes voisins des eaux ne persistent pas dans leur orgueil, car tous ils sont livrés à la mort pour rejoindre sous la terre parmi les enfants d'Adam ceux qui sont descendus dans la fosse.

15 Thus saith the Lord GOD: In the day when he went down to the nether-world I caused the deep to mourn and cover itself for him, and I restrained the rivers thereof, and the great waters were stayed; and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him. Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Le jour où il descendit dans les Enfers, je mis l'abîme en deuil, et le couvris d'un voile, et j'arrêtai les fleuves, et le cours des grandes eaux fut suspendu; pour lui je fis prendre le deuil au Liban, et tous les arbres des campagnes à cause de lui furent dans l'abattement. 16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to the nether-world with them that descend into the pit; and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, were comforted in the nether parts of the earth. (Sheol h7585)

Du fracas de sa chute j'épouvantai les peuples, quand je le précipitai dans les Enfers vers ceux qui sont descendus dans la fosse; et ce fut sous la terre une consolation pour tous les arbres d'Éden, les plus excellents et les meilleurs du Liban, tous abreuvés par les eaux. (Sheol h7585)

17 They also went down into the nether-world with him unto them that are slain by the sword; yea, they that were in his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the nations. (Sheol h7585)

Eux aussi descendirent avec lui dans les Enfers près de ceux que l'épée a percés; ils étaient son bras et demeuraient sous son ombre parmi les nations. (Sheol h7585)

18 To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? yet shall thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the nether parts of the earth; thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised, with them that are slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.'

A qui, [Pharaon, ] ressembles-tu ainsi en gloire et en grandeur parmi les arbres d'Éden? Ainsi tu seras précipité avec les arbres d'Éden sous la terre, tu seras gisant au milieu des incirconcis avec ceux que l'épée a percés. Ainsi en sera-t-il de Pharaon et de tout son peuple, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel.
