Joshua 17

1 There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he was the firstborn of Joseph; to wit, for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead: because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan.

Et le sort adjugea son lot à la tribu de Manassé (qui était le premier-né de Joseph), à Machir, premier-né de Manassé, maître du Galaad; car c'était un guerrier; il obtint donc le Galaad et le Basan.

2 There was also a lot for the rest of the children of Manasseh by their families; for the children of Abiezer, and for the children of Helek, and for the children of Asriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida: these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph by their families.

Et les autres fils de Manassé eurent aussi leur lot en raison de leurs familles, les fils de Abiézer, et les fils de Hélek, et les fils de Asriel, et les fils de Séchem, et les fils de Hépher, et les fils de Semida; tels sont les fils de Manassé, fils de Joseph, les descendants mâles selon leurs familles.

3 But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters, Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

Or Tselophehad, fils de Hépher, fils de Galaad, fils de Machir, fils de Manassé, n'avait point de fils, mais seulement des filles; et voici les noms de ses filles: Mahéla et Noa, Hogla, Milka et Thirtsa;

4 And they came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers. Therefore according to the commandment of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.

et elles se présentèrent au Prêtre Eléazar, et à Josué, fils de Nun, et aux Princes, en disant: L'Éternel a commandé à Moïse de nous donner un lot parmi nos frères. Et sur l'ordre de l'Éternel il leur donna un lot parmi les frères de leur père.

5 And there fell ten portions to Manasseh, beside the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side Jordan;

Et il échut à Manassé dix portions outre la contrée du Galaad et du Basan, qui est au delà du Jourdain.

6 Because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons: and the rest of Manasseh’s sons had the land of Gilead.

Car les filles de Manassé obtinrent un lot parmi ses fils, et le pays de Galaad échut aux fils de Manassé de l'autre branche.

7 And the coast of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah, that lies before Shechem; and the border went along on the right hand to the inhabitants of Entappuah.

Et la frontière de Manassé allait de Asser à Michmethath située à l'est de Sichem; et elle courait vers le sud jusqu'aux habitants de Ein-Thappuah.

8 Now Manasseh had the land of Tappuah: but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim;

Manassé eut la région de Thappuah, et les fils d'Ephraïm, Thappuah à la frontière de Manassé.

9 And the coast descended to the river Kanah, southward of the river: these cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh: the coast of Manasseh also was on the north side of the river, and the outgoings of it were at the sea:

Et la frontière descendait à Nahal-Kana (rivière des joncs) au midi de la rivière. Ces villes échues à Ephraïm étaient enclavées entre celles de Manassé. Et la frontière de Manassé était au nord de la rivière et aboutissait à la mer.

10 Southward it was Ephraim’s, and northward it was Manasseh’s, and the sea is his border; and they met together in Asher on the north, and in Issachar on the east.

Le côté du midi fut à Ephraïm, et le côté du nord à Manassé, et la mer en était la limite. Et au nord ils confinaient à Asser, et du côté de l'orient à Issaschar.

11 And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher Bethshean and her towns, and Ibleam and her towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and her towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns, even three countries.

Et Manassé eut des enclaves dans Issaschar, et dans Asser Beth-Séan et ses annexes, et Jibleam et ses annexes ainsi que les habitants de Dor et ses annexes, et les habitants de Ein-Dor et ses annexes, et les habitants de Thaanach et ses annexes et les habitants de Megiddo et ses annexes, triple district.

12 Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

Et les fils de Manassé ne purent faire la conquête de ces villes et les Cananéens résolurent de demeurer dans cette contrée.

13 Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel were waxen strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, but did not utterly drive them out.

Et lorsque les enfants d'Israël eurent la force, ils rendirent les Cananéens corvéables, mais sans en venir à les expulser.

14 And the children of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, Why have you given me but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people, for as much as the LORD has blessed me till now?

Et les fils de Joseph s'adressèrent à Josué en ces termes: Pourquoi ne nous mets-tu en possession que d'un lot, que d'une portion, tandis que nous formons un peuple nombreux ensuite de ce que l'Éternel nous a bénis jusqu'ici?

15 And Joshua answered them, If you be a great people, then get you up to the wood country, and cut down for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for you.

Et Josué leur dit: Si vous êtes un peuple nombreux, avancez-vous dans la forêt, et faites-vous-y un défrichement dans le pays des Périzzites et des Rephaïms, puisque vous êtes à l'étroit dans la montagne d'Ephraïm!

16 And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are of Bethshean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel.

Et les fils de Joseph dirent: La montagne est inaccessible pour nous, et il y a des chars ferrés chez tous les Cananéens qui habitent la région de la vallée, chez ceux qui sont dans Béth-Sean et ses annexes, et chez ceux qui sont dans la vallée de Jizréel.

17 And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, You are a great people, and have great power: you shall not have one lot only:

Et Josué dit à la maison de Joseph, à Ephraïm et à Manassé: Vous êtes un peuple nombreux et votre force est grande; vous n'aurez pas un simple lot,

18 But the mountain shall be yours; for it is a wood, and you shall cut it down: and the outgoings of it shall be yours: for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong.

mais la montagne sera à vous; puisque c'est une forêt, défrichez-la, et ses issues seront à vous. Car vous expulserez les Cananéens, parce qu'ils ont des chars ferrés, parce qu'ils sont puissants.
