Isaiah 17

1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from [being] a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.

ダマスコについての託宣。見よ、ダマスコは町の姿を失って、荒塚となる。

2 The cities of Aroer [are] forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make [them] afraid.

その町々はとこしえに捨てられ、家畜の群れの住む所となって、伏しやすむが、これを脅かす者はない。

3 The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts.

エフライムのとりではすたり、ダマスコの主権はやみ、スリヤの残れる者は、イスラエルの子らの栄光のように消えうせると万軍の主は言われる。

4 And in that day it shall come to pass, [that] the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean.

その日、ヤコブの栄えは衰え、その肥えたる肉はやせ、

5 And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm; and it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of Rephaim.

あたかも刈入れ人がまだ刈らない麦を集め、かいなをもって穂を刈り取ったあとのように、レパイムの谷で穂を拾い集めたあとのようになる。

6 Yet gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an olive tree, two [or] three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four [or] five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the LORD God of Israel.

オリブの木を打つとき、二つ三つの実をこずえに残し、あるいは四つ五つをみのり多き木の枝に残すように、とり残されるものがあるとイスラエルの神、主は言われる。

7 At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel.

その日、人々はその造り主を仰ぎのぞみ、イスラエルの聖者に目をとめ、

8 And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect [that] which his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images.

おのれの手のわざである祭壇を仰ぎのぞまず、おのれの指が造ったアシラ像と香の祭壇とに目をとめない。

9 In that day shall his strong cities be as a forsaken bough, and an uppermost branch, which they left because of the children of Israel: and there shall be desolation.

その日、彼らの堅固な町々は昔イスラエルの子らのゆえに捨て去られたヒビびとおよびアモリびとの荒れ跡のように荒れ地になる。

10 Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips:

これはあなたがたが自分の救の神を忘れ、自分の避け所なる岩を心にとめなかったからだ。それゆえ、あなたがたは美しい植物を植え、異なる神の切り枝をさし、

11 In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to flourish: [but] the harvest [shall be] a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.

その植えた日にこれを成長させ、そのまいた朝にこれを花咲かせても、その収穫は悲しみと、いやしがたい苦しみの日にとび去る。

12 Woe to the multitude of many people, [which] make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations, [that] make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!

ああ、多くの民はなりどよめく、海のなりどよめくように、彼らはなりどよめく。ああ、もろもろの国はなりとどろく、大水のなりとどろくように、彼らはなりとどろく。

13 The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but [God] shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.

もろもろの国は多くの水のなりとどろくように、なりとどろく。しかし、神は彼らを懲しめられる。彼らは遠くのがれて、風に吹き去られる山の上のもみがらのように、また暴風にうず巻くちりのように追いやられる。

14 And behold at eveningtide trouble; [and] before the morning he [is] not. This [is] the portion of them that spoil us, and the lot of them that rob us.

夕暮には、見よ、恐れがある。まだ夜の明けないうちに彼らはうせた。これはわれわれをかすめる者の受くべき分、われわれを奪う者の引くべきくじである。
