Proverbs 13
1 A wise son is obedient to his father: but a disobedient son will be destroyed.
Ein weiser Sohn hört auf des Vaters Zucht, ein Spötter nicht einmal aufs Schelten.
2 A good [man] shall eat of the fruits of righteousness: but the lives of transgressors shall perish before their time.
Von der Frucht seines Mundes ißt einer Gutes, falsche Seelen aber [werden gesättigt mit] Frevel.
3 He that keeps his own mouth keeps his own life: but he that is hasty with his lips shall bring terror upon himself.
Wer auf seinen Mund achtgibt, behütet seine Seele; wer aber immer das Maul aufsperrt, tut's zu seinem Unglück.
4 Every slothful man desires, but the hands of the active are diligent.
Der Faule wünscht sich viel und hat doch nichts; die Seele der Fleißigen aber wird fett.
5 A righteous man hates an unjust word: but an ungodly man is ashamed, and will have no confidence.
Der Gerechte haßt die Verleumdungen; aber der Gottlose verursacht Schande und Spott.
Die Gerechtigkeit bewahrt den Unschuldigen; die Gottlosigkeit aber stürzt den Sünder ins Verderben.
7 There are [some] who, having nothing, enrich themselves: and there are [some] who bring themselves down in [the midst of] much wealth.
Einer stellt sich reich und hat doch gar nichts, ein anderer stellt sich arm und besitzt doch viel.
8 A man's own wealth is the ransom of his life: but the poor endures not threatening.
Mit seinem Reichtum kann jemand sich das Leben retten; ein Armer aber bekommt keine Drohungen zu hören.
9 The righteous always have light: but the light of the ungodly is quenched. Crafty souls go astray in sins: but just men pity, and are merciful.
Das Licht der Gerechten wird hell brennen; die Leuchte der Gottlosen aber wird erlöschen.
10 A bad man does evil with insolence: but they that are judges of themselves are wise.
Durch Übermut entsteht nur Zank, wo man sich aber raten läßt, da wohnt Weisheit.
11 Wealth gotten hastily with iniquity is diminished: but he that gathers for himself with godliness shall be increased. The righteous is merciful, and lends.
Was man mühelos gewinnt, das zerrinnt; was man aber mit der Hand sammelt, das mehrt sich.
12 Better is he that begins to help heartily, than he that promises and leads [another] to hope: for a good desire is a tree of life.
Langes Harren macht das Herz krank; ein erfüllter Wunsch aber ist ein Baum des Lebens.
13 He that slights a matter shall be slighted of it: but he that fears the commandment has health [of soul]. To a crafty son there shall be nothing good: but a wise servant shall have prosperous doings, and his way shall be directed aright.
Wer die Mahnung verachtet, wird von ihr gepfändet; wer aber das Gebot fürchtet, wird belohnt.
14 The law of the wise is fountain of life: but the man void of understanding shall die by a snare.
Die Lehre des Weisen ist eine Quelle des Lebens, daß man meide die Stricke des Todes.
15 Sound discretion gives favor, and to know the law is the part of a sound understanding: but the ways of scorners tend to destruction.
Guter Verstand erwirbt Gunst; aber der Weg der Heuchler ist schwierig.
16 Every prudent man acts with knowledge: but the fool displays his own mischief.
Der Kluge tut alles mit Vernunft; aber der Tor verbreitet Dummheiten.
17 A rash king shall fall into mischief: but a wise messenger shall deliver him.
Ein gottloser Bote stürzt ins Unglück, aber ein treuer Zeuge bringt Heilung.
18 Instruction removes poverty and disgrace: but he that attends to reproofs shall be honored.
Wer aus der Schule läuft, gerät in Armut und Schande; wer aber auf Zurechtweisungen achtet, kommt zu Ehren.
19 The desires of the godly gladden the soul, but the works of the ungodly are far from knowledge.
Die Befriedigung eines Verlangens tut der Seele wohl; aber vom Bösen zu weichen, ist den Toren ein Greuel.
20 If you walk with wise men you shall be wise: but he that walks with fools shall be known.
Der Umgang mit den Weisen macht dich weise; wer aber an den Narren Wohlgefallen hat, wird in Sünde fallen.
21 Evil shall pursue sinners; but good shall overtake the righteous.
Das Unglück verfolgt die Sünder, den Gerechten aber wird Gutes vergolten.
22 A good man shall inherit children's children; and the wealth of ungodly men is laid up for the just.
Was ein guter Mensch hinterläßt, geht über auf Kindeskinder; das Vermögen des Sünders aber wird für den Gerechten aufgespart.
23 The righteous shall spend many years in wealth: but the unrighteous shall perish suddenly.
Oft wäre viel Speise in den Furchen der Armen; aber man nimmt sie ihnen weg gegen alles Recht!
24 He that spares the rod hates his son: but he that loves, carefully chastens [him].
Wer seine Rute spart, der haßt seinen Sohn; wer ihn aber liebhat, der züchtigt ihn beizeiten.
25 A just [man] eats and satisfies his soul: but the souls of the ungodly are in lack.
Der Gerechte ißt, bis er satt ist; der Gottlosen Bauch aber hat nie genug.
