Proverbs 18
1 He that separateth himself seeketh [his own] desire, and rageth against all sound wisdom.
L’Homme qui s’isole ne fait que suivre ses caprices: il s’insurge contre tout ce qui est raisonnable.
2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but only that his heart may reveal itself.
Le fou ne veut pas de la raison: il ne demande qu’à mettre à nu son cœur.
3 When the wicked cometh, there cometh also contempt, and with ignominy cometh reproach.
Le méchant entraîne le mépris à sa suite; la honte accompagne le manque de dignité.
4 The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters; the wellspring of wisdom is as a flowing brook.
Ce sont des eaux profondes que les paroles d’une bouche humaine, un torrent jaillissant, une source de sagesse.
5 To accept the person of the wicked is not good, [nor] to turn aside the righteous in judgment.
Prendre parti pour le méchant, évincer le juste de ses droits, est bien mal agir.
6 A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for stripes.
Les lèvres du sot entraînent des disputes, et sa bouche appelle les coups.
7 A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.
La bouche du sot cause sa ruine, et ses lèvres sont un piège pour sa personne.
8 The words of a whisperer are as dainty, morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
Les paroles d’un boutefeu sont comme des coups qui retentissent au plus profond des entrailles.
9 He also that is slack in his work is brother to him that is a destroyer.
Apporter de la négligence dans son travail suffit pour être l’émule d’un artisan de ruines.
10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
Le nom du Seigneur est une tour fortifiée: le juste s’y réfugie et est hors d’atteinte.
11 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own imagination.
La fortune est une place forte pour le riche, un rempart tutélaire, à ce qu’il s’imagine.
12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour [goeth] humility.
Lorsque s’enfle le cœur de l’homme, sa ruine est proche; l’honneur suit de près l’humilité.
13 He that giveth answer before he heareth, it is folly and shame unto him.
Répondre avant d’avoir entendu, c’est une folie et une cause de confusion.
14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a broken spirit who can bear?
Un esprit viril sait supporter la maladie; mais un esprit abattu, qui le soutiendra?
15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.
Le cœur bien inspiré acquiert la science; l’oreille des sages est avide de savoir.
16 A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.
Les cadeaux ouvrent un facile accès à l’homme et le font arriver jusqu’aux grands.
17 He that pleadeth his cause first [seemeth] just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him out.
Qui parle le premier dans un procès a raison; vienne la partie adverse, on approfondit la cause.
18 The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty.
Le sort met fin aux disputes et tranche le débat entre les puissants.
19 A brother offended [is harder to be won] than a strong city: and [such] contentions are like the bars of a castle.
Un frère infidèle est pire qu’une ville forte, les disputes, que les verrous d’un château-fort.
20 A man’s belly shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; with the increase of his lips shall he be satisfied.
De l’usage de la parole dépend la nourriture de l’homme; il s’alimente du produit de ses lèvres.
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
La mort et la vie sont au pouvoir de la langue; ceux qui aiment l’exercer en goûtent les fruits.
22 Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.
Qui a trouvé une femme distinguée a trouvé le bonheur et a obtenu une faveur de l’Eternel.
23 The poor useth entreaties: but the rich answereth roughly.
Le pauvre parle en suppliant, le riche répond avec dureté.
24 He that maketh many friends [doeth it] to his own destruction: but there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Avoir beaucoup d’amis nuit; mais tel ami est plus attaché qu’un frère.
