Proverbs 28
1 The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.
Les méchants prennent la fuite, alors que personne ne les poursuit; les justes, tel un lion, sont pleins de sécurité.
2 For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by men of understanding [and] knowledge the state [thereof] shall be prolonged.
Quand le désordre sévit dans un pays, ses chefs sont nombreux. Un seul homme de sens et d’expérience suffit pour faire durer le bon ordre.
3 A needy man that oppresseth the poor is [like] a sweeping rain which leaveth no food.
Un homme pauvre qui pressure les humbles est comme une pluie qui ravage tout et amène la famine.
4 They that forsake the law praise the wicked: but such as keep the law contend with them.
Ceux qui désertent la loi glorifient l’impie, ceux qui l’observent s’indignent contre lui.
5 Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the LORD understand all things.
Les hommes pervers ne comprennent rien au droit; mais ceux qui recherchent l’Eternel comprennent tout.
6 Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in [his] ways, though he be rich.
Mieux vaut le pauvre, marchant dans sa droiture, que le riche aux voies tortueuses.
7 Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of gluttonous men shameth his father.
Qui respecte la loi est un fils intelligent; mais qui fraye avec les jouisseurs fait la honte de son père.
8 He that augmenteth his substance by usury and increase, gathereth it for him that hath pity on the poor.
Augmenter sa fortune par l’intérêt et l’usure, c’est amasser pour l’ami des pauvres.
9 He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.
Fermez l’oreille aux leçons de la loi votre prière même devient un acte abominable.
10 Whoso causeth the upright to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the perfect shall inherit good.
Qui entraîne des gens de bien dans une mauvaise voie tombe dans son propre piège; le bonheur est le lot de la droiture.
11 The rich man is wise in his own conceit; but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out.
Le riche se prend pour un sage: un pauvre homme intelligent le perce à fond.
12 When the righteous triumph, there is great glory: but when the wicked rise, men hide themselves.
Quand les justes triomphent, c’est fête générale; quand les méchants s’élèvent, les gens se cachent.
13 He that covereth his transgressions shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall obtain mercy.
Dissimuler ses péchés ne porte pas bonheur; qui les confesse et y renonce obtient miséricorde.
14 Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.
Heureux l’homme constamment timoré! Qui endurcit son cœur tombe dans le malheur.
15 [As] a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; [so is] a wicked ruler over a poor people.
Un lion rugissant, un ours affamé, tel est un méchant prince pour une nation pauvre,
16 The prince that lacketh understanding is also a great oppressor: [but] he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days.
un despote dépourvu de sens et chargé de rapines. Celui qui hait le lucre prolonge ses jours.
17 A man that is laden with the blood of any person shall flee unto the pit; let no man stay him.
Un homme accablé sous le poids d’un meurtre arrive, dans sa fuite, au bord de la fosse; qu’on ne lui tende pas la main!
18 Whoso walketh uprightly shall be delivered: but he that is perverse in [his] ways shall fall at once.
Qui marche dans l’intégrité sera sauvé, mais qui suit des voies tortueuses tombera d’un coup.
19 He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain [persons] shall have poverty enough.
Cultiver sa terre, c’est s’assurer du pain en abondance; poursuivre des choses frivoles, c’est se rassasier de misère.
20 A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be unpunished.
L’Homme loyal est comblé de bénédictions; qui a hâte de s’enrichir n’échappe pas au malheur.
21 To have respect of persons is not good: neither that a man should transgress for a piece of bread.
Faire acception de personnes est une mauvaise action; mais il en est qui se rendent coupables pour une miche de pain.
22 He that hath an evil eye hasteth after riches, and knoweth not that want shall come upon him.
L’Homme envieux court après la fortune et il ne s’aperçoit pas que la misère viendra fondre sur lui.
23 He that rebuketh a man shall afterward find more favour than he that flattereth with the tongue.
Celui qui reprend les gens finit par gagner leur bienveillance bien mieux que le flatteur.
24 Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer.
Voler père et mère en disant que ce n’est pas un crime, c’est se faire le compagnon d’un artisan de ruines.
25 He that is of a greedy spirit stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat.
L’Homme aux appétits insatiables suscite des discordes; qui met sa confiance en l’Eternel jouira de l’abondance.
26 He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.
Se fier à son intelligence, c’est être sot; qui se dirige avec sagesse échappe au danger.
27 He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.
Donner au pauvre, ce n’est pas se priver: qui en détourne les regards est chargé de malédictions.
28 When the wicked rise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the righteous increase.
Lorsque les méchants s’élèvent, les gens se cachent; quand ils succombent, les gens de bien se multiplient.
