Acts 14
1 The same thing occurred in Iconium, where Paul and Barnabas went into the Jewish Synagogue, and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed in Christ.
A Iconium, Paul et Barnabé entrèrent de même dans la synagogue des Juifs, et y parlèrent de telle sorte qu'une grande multitude de Juifs et de Grecs embrassèrent la foi.
2 But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the Gentiles, and poisoned their minds against the Brethren.
Mais les Juifs restés incrédules excitèrent et aigrirent l'esprit des Gentils contre leurs frères.
3 Therefore Paul and Barnabas spent a long time there, and spoke out fearlessly, relying upon the Lord, who confirmed the Message of his Love by permitting signs and wonders to take place at their hands.
Ils firent néanmoins un assez long séjour, parlant avec assurance, appuyés par le Seigneur, qui rendait témoignage à la parole de sa grâce, par les prodiges et les miracles qu'il leur donnait de faire.
4 But the townspeople were divided, some siding with the Jews, some with the Apostles;
Toute la ville se divisa; les uns étaient pour les Juifs, les autres pour les Apôtres.
5 and, when there was an attempt on the part of both Gentiles and Jews, with their leading men, to resort to violence and to stone them,
Mais comme les Gentils et les Juifs, avec leurs chefs, se mettaient en mouvement pour les outrager et les lapider,
6 the Apostles heard of it, and took refuge in Lystra and Derbe, towns in Lycaonia, and in the district round,
les Apôtres, l'ayant su, se réfugièrent dans les villes de Lycaonie, Lystres et Derbé, et le pays d'alentour,
7 and there they continued to tell the Good News.
et ils y annoncèrent la bonne nouvelle.
8 In the streets of Lystra there used to sit a man who had no power in his feet; he had been lame from his birth, and had never walked.
Il y avait à Lystres un homme perclus des jambes, qui se tenait assis, car il était boiteux de naissance et n'avait jamais marché.
9 This man was listening to Paul speaking, when Paul, fixing his eyes on him, and seeing that he had the faith to be healed,
Il écoutait Paul parler; et Paul, ayant arrêté les yeux sur lui et voyant qu'il avait la foi pour être guéri,
10 said loudly: “Stand upright on your feet.” The man leaped up, and began walking about,
dit d'une voix forte: " Lève-toi droit sur tes pieds. " Aussitôt il bondit et il marchait.
11 and the crowd, seeing what Paul had done, called out in the Lycaonian language: “The Gods have made themselves like men and have come down to us.”
A la vue de ce que Paul venait de faire, la foule éleva la voix et dit en lycaonien: " Les dieux sous une forme humaine sont descendus vers nous. "
12 So they called Barnabas ‘Zeus,’ and Paul ‘Hermes,’ because he took the lead in speaking;
Et ils appelaient Barnabé Jupiter, et Paul Mercure, parce que c'était lui qui portait la parole.
13 and the priest of Zeus-beyond-the-Walls, accompanied by the crowd, brought bullocks and garlands to the gates, with the intention of offering sacrifices.
De plus, le prêtre du temple de Jupiter, qui était à l'entrée de la ville, amena devant les portes des taureaux avec des bandelettes, et voulait, ainsi que la foule, offrir un sacrifice.
14 But, when the Apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd. “Friends, why are you doing this?” they shouted.
Les Apôtres Paul et Barnabé, l'ayant appris, déchirèrent leurs vêtements et se précipitèrent au milieu de la foule;
15 “We are only men like yourselves, and we have come with the Good News that you should turn away from these follies to a living God, ‘who made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them.’
et, d'une voix retentissante, ils disaient: " O hommes, pourquoi faites-vous cela? Nous aussi, nous sommes des hommes sujets aux mêmes faiblesses que vous; nous vous annonçons qu'il faut quitter ces vanités pour vous tourner vers le Dieu vivant, qui a fait le ciel et la terre, la mer, et tout ce qu'ils renferment.
16 In bygone times he permitted all the nations to go their own ways.
Ce Dieu, dans les siècles passés, a laissé toutes les nations suivre leurs voies,
17 Yet he has not failed to give you, in the good he does, some revelation of himself — sending you from heaven rain and fruitful seasons, and gladdening your hearts with plenty and good cheer.”
sans que toutefois il ait cessé de se rendre témoignage à lui-même, faisant du bien, dispensant du ciel les pluies et les saisons favorables, nous donnant la nourriture avec abondance et remplissant nos cœurs de joie. "
18 Even with this appeal they could hardly restrain the people from offering sacrifice to them.
Malgré ces paroles, ils ne parvinrent qu'avec peine à empêcher le peuple de leur offrir un sacrifice.
19 Presently, however, there came some Jews from Antioch, and Iconium who, after they had won over the people, stoned Paul, and dragged him out of the town, thinking him to be dead.
Alors survinrent d'Antioche et d'Iconium des Juifs qui, ayant gagné le peuple, lapidèrent Paul et le traînèrent hors de la ville, le croyant mort.
20 But, when the disciples had gathered round him, he got up and went back into the town; the next day he went with Barnabas to Derbe.
Mais les disciples l'ayant entouré, il se releva et rentra dans la ville. Le lendemain, il partit pour Derbé avec Barnabé.
21 After telling the Good News throughout that town, and making a number of converts, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch,
Quand ils eurent évangélisé cette ville et fait un assez grand nombre de disciples, ils retournèrent à Lystres, à Iconium et à Antioche,
22 reassuring the minds of the disciples, urging them to remain true to the Faith, and showing that it is only through many troubles that we can enter the Kingdom of God.
fortifiant l'esprit des disciples, les exhortant à persévérer dans la foi, et disant que c'est par beaucoup de tribulations qu'il nous faut entrer dans le royaume de Dieu.
23 They also appointed Officers for them in every Church, and, after prayer and fasting, commended them to the Lord in whom they had learned to believe.
Ils instituèrent des Anciens dans chaque Eglise, après avoir prié et jeûné, et les recommandèrent au Seigneur, en qui ils avaient cru.
24 Paul and Barnabas then went through Pisidia, and came into Pamphylia,
Traversant ensuite la Pisidie, ils vinrent en Pamphylie,
25 and, after telling the Message at Perga, went down to Attaleia.
et après avoir annoncé la parole de Dieu à Perge, ils descendirent à Attalie.
26 From there they sailed to Antioch — the place where they had been committed to the gracious care of God for the work which they had now finished.
De là ils firent voile pour Antioche, d'où ils étaient partis, après avoir été recommandés à la grâce de Dieu, pour l'œuvre qu'ils venaient d'accomplir.
27 After their arrival, they gathered the Church together, and gave an account of all that God had helped them to do, and especially how he had opened to the Gentiles the door of faith;
Dès qu'ils furent arrivés, ils assemblèrent l'Eglise, et racontèrent tout ce que Dieu avait fait pour eux, et comment il avait ouvert aux nations la porte de la foi.
28 and at Antioch they stayed with the disciples for a considerable time.
Et ils demeurèrent à Antioche assez longtemps avec les disciples.
