Matthew 3
1 In those days, Yochanan the Immerser came, proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea, saying,
そのころ，バプテスマを施す人ヨハネが現われ，ユダヤの荒野で宣教して言った，
2 “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!”
「悔い改めなさい。天の王国は近づいたからだ！」
3 For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, make the way of the Lord ready! Make his paths straight!”
この者は，預言者イザヤによって語られた者だったのである。こう言われていた。 「荒野で叫ぶ者の声がする，主の道を整えよ，その道筋をまっすぐにせよ」。
4 Now Yochanan himself wore clothing made of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
ところで，このヨハネはラクダの毛で作った衣を身に着け，皮の帯を腰に巻いており，イナゴと野みつを食べていた。
5 Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him.
その時，エルサレムとユダヤ全土とヨルダン周辺の全地方の人々が彼のところに出て来た。
6 They were immersed by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
人々は自分の罪を告白して，ヨルダンで彼からバプテスマを受けていた。
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his immersion, he said to them, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
しかし，ファリサイ人たちやサドカイ人たちの多くが彼の施すバプテスマに来るのを見た時，彼は彼らに言った，「マムシらの子孫よ，来ようとしている憤りから逃れるようにと，だれがあなた方に告げたのか。
8 Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance!
それなら，悔い改めにふさわしい実を生み出しなさい！
9 Don’t think to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.
『我々の父にアブラハムがいる』などと考えてはいけない。あなた方に告げるが，神はこれらの石からでもアブラハムに子孫を起こすことができるのだ。
10 Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.
「おのはすでに木々の根もとに置かれている。だから，良い実を生み出さない木はみな切り倒されて，火の中に投げ込まれるのだ。
11 “I indeed immerse you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will immerse you in the Holy Spirit.
わたしは確かに，悔い改めのためにあなた方に水でバプテスマを施しているが，わたしの後に来る方はわたしより強力だ。わたしはその方の履物を脱がすにも値しない。その方は，あなた方に聖霊でバプテスマを施すだろう。
12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.”
ふるい分けるフォークがその手にあり，その脱穀場をすっかりきれいにする。その小麦を倉に集め，もみ殻のほうは消すことのできない火で焼き尽くすだろう」。
13 Then Yeshua came from Galilee to the Jordan to Yochanan, to be immersed by him.
その時，イエスはガリラヤからヨルダンに，ヨハネのところに来た。彼からバプテスマを受けるためである。
14 But Yochanan would have hindered him, saying, “I need to be immersed by you, and you come to me?”
しかしヨハネは，イエスをとどめようとして言った，「わたしこそあなたからバプテスマを受ける必要があるのに，あなたのほうがわたしのところに来られるのですか」。
15 But Yeshua, answering, said to him, “Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfil all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.
しかしイエスは答えて彼に言った，「今はそうさせてもらいたい。このようにしてすべての義を果たすのは，わたしたちにとってふさわしいことなのだ」 。そこで彼はイエスの言うとおりにさせた。
16 Yeshua, when he was immersed, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.
イエスはバプテスマを受けると，すぐに水から上がった。すると見よ，天が彼のために開いた。彼は，神の霊がハトのように自分の上に下って来るのを目にした。
17 Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
見よ，天から出た声が言った，「これはわたしの愛する子，わたしの心にかなう者である」。
