Proverbs 23
1 When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you;
Cuando te sientas a comer con una regla, considera con diligencia lo que tienes delante;
2 put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite.

3 Don’t be desirous of his dainties, since they are deceitful food.

4 Don’t weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint.
No te canses de ser rico. En tu sabiduría, muestra moderación.
5 Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.
¿Por qué pones tus ojos en lo que no es? Porque ciertamente le salen alas como a un águila y vuela en el cielo.
6 Don’t eat the food of him who has a stingy eye, and don’t crave his delicacies,
No comas la comida de quien tiene un ojo tacaño, y no anhelan sus delicias,
7 for as he thinks about the cost, so he is. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

8 You will vomit up the morsel which you have eaten and waste your pleasant words.
Vomitarás el bocado que has comido y desperdiciar tus agradables palabras.
9 Don’t speak in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.
No hables al oído de un tonto, porque despreciará la sabiduría de tus palabras.
10 Don’t move the ancient boundary stone. Don’t encroach on the fields of the fatherless,
No muevas el antiguo mojón. No invadan los campos de los huérfanos,
11 for their Defender is strong. He will plead their case against you.
para su Defensor es fuerte. Él defenderá su caso contra ti.
12 Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge.
Aplica tu corazón a la instrucción, y tus oídos a las palabras del conocimiento.
13 Don’t withhold correction from a child. If you punish him with the rod, he will not die.
No retengas la corrección de un niño. Si lo castigas con la vara, no morirá.

15 My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad, even mine.
Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, entonces mi corazón se alegrará, incluso el mío.
16 Yes, my heart will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
Sí, mi corazón se alegrará cuando tus labios dicen lo que es correcto.
17 Don’t let your heart envy sinners, but rather fear the LORD all day long.
Que tu corazón no envidie a los pecadores, sino que teman a Yahvé todo el día.
18 Indeed surely there is a future hope, and your hope will not be cut off.
Ciertamente, hay una esperanza futura, y tu esperanza no será cortada.
19 Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path!
Escucha, hijo mío, y sé sabio, ¡y mantener tu corazón en el camino correcto!
20 Don’t be amongst ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat;
No te encuentres entre los que beben demasiado vino, o los que se atiborran de carne;
21 for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags.
porque el borracho y el glotón se volverán pobres; y la somnolencia los viste de harapos.
22 Listen to your father who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.
Escucha a tu padre que te dio la vida, y no desprecies a tu madre cuando sea vieja.
23 Buy the truth, and don’t sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding.
Compra la verdad y no la vendas. Consigue sabiduría, disciplina y comprensión.
24 The father of the righteous has great joy. Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him.
El padre de los justos tiene una gran alegría. Quien engendra un hijo sabio se deleita en él.
25 Let your father and your mother be glad! Let her who bore you rejoice!
¡Que se alegren tu padre y tu madre! ¡Que se alegre la que te parió!
26 My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways.
Hijo mío, dame tu corazón; y que tus ojos se mantengan en mis caminos.
27 For a prostitute is a deep pit; and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
Para una prostituta es un pozo profundo; y una esposa caprichosa es un pozo estrecho.
28 Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the unfaithful amongst men.
Sí, está al acecho como un ladrón, y aumenta los infieles entre los hombres.
29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
¿Quién se lamenta? ¿Quién tiene pena? ¿Quién tiene conflictos? ¿Quién tiene quejas? ¿Quién tiene moretones innecesarios? ¿Quién tiene los ojos inyectados en sangre?
30 Those who stay long at the wine; those who go to seek out mixed wine.
Los que se quedan mucho tiempo en el vino; los que van a buscar vino mezclado.
31 Don’t look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly.
No mires el vino cuando está rojo, cuando brilla en la taza, cuando baja sin problemas.
32 In the end, it bites like a snake, and poisons like a viper.
Al final, muerde como una serpiente, y envenena como una víbora.
33 Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things.
Tus ojos verán cosas extrañas, y tu mente imaginará cosas confusas.
34 Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the middle of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging:
Sí, serás como el que se acuesta en medio del mar, o como el que se acuesta encima de los aparejos:
35 “They hit me, and I was not hurt! They beat me, and I don’t feel it! When will I wake up? I can do it again. I will look for more.”
“¡Me golpearon, y no me hirieron! ¡Me golpean y no lo siento! ¿Cuándo me despertaré? Puedo hacerlo de nuevo. Buscaré más”.
