2 Chronicles 32
1 After these things and this truth, come hath Sennacherib king of Asshur, yea, he cometh in to Judah, and encampeth against the cities of the bulwarks, and saith to rend them unto himself.
Après ces choses si fidèlement exécutées, Sennachérib, roi des Assyriens, vint et entra dans Juda; il assiégea les villes fortifiées, voulant les prendre.
2 And Hezekiah seeth that Sennacherib hath come, and his face [is] to the battle against Jerusalem,
Lorsqu’Ezéchias eut vu cela, savoir que Sennachérib était venu, et que tout l’effort de la guerre était tourné contre Jérusalem,
3 and he taketh counsel with his heads and his mighty ones, to stop the waters of the fountains that [are] at the outside of the city — and they help him,
Il tint conseil avec les princes et les hommes les plus braves, pour boucher les sources des fontaines qui étaient hors de la ville: l’avis de tous l’ayant décidé,
4 and much people are gathered, and they stop all the fountains and the brook that is rushing into the midst of the land, saying, 'Why do the kings of Asshur come, and have found much water?'
Il assembla une très grande multitude, et il boucha toutes les sources, et le ruisseau qui coulait au milieu du pays, disant: C’est de peur que les rois des Assyriens ne viennent, et ne trouvent une abondance d’eau.
5 And he strengtheneth himself, and buildeth the whole of the wall that is broken, and causeth [it] to ascend unto the towers, and at the outside of the wall another, and strengtheneth Millo, [in] the city of David, and maketh darts in abundance, and shields.
Il bâtit aussi avec grand soin tout le mur qui avait été ruiné, et il construisit les tours au dessus, et en dehors de l’autre mur; il restaura Mello dans la cité de David, et il fit des armes de tout genre et des boucliers;
6 And he putteth heads of war over the people, and gathereth them unto him, unto the broad place of a gate of the city, and speaketh unto their heart, saying,
Et il établit ensuite des chefs de combattants dans l’armée; puis il les convoqua sur la place de la porte de la cité, et il parla à leur cœur, disant:
7 'Be strong and courageous, be not afraid, nor be cast down from the face of the king of Asshur, and from the face of all the multitude that [is] with him, for with us [are] more than with him.
Agissez courageusement, et fortifiez-vous: ne craignez point, et ne redoutez point le roi des Assyriens, ni toute cette multitude qui est avec lui; car il y a un plus grand nombre avec nous qu’avec lui.
8 With him [is] an arm of flesh, and with us [is] Jehovah our God, to help us, and to fight our battles;' and the people are supported by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
Car avec lui est un bras de chair; avec nous le Seigneur notre Dieu, qui est notre aide et combat pour nous. Et le peuple fut fortifié par ces paroles d’Ezéchias, roi de Juda.
9 After this hath Sennacherib king of Asshur sent his servants to Jerusalem — and he [is] by Lachish, and all his power with him — against Hezekiah king of Judah, and against all Judah, who [are] in Jerusalem, saying,
Après que ces choses se furent passées, Sennachérib, roi des Assyriens, envoya ses serviteurs à Jérusalem (car lui-même assiégeait Lachis avec toute son armée) vers Ezéchias, roi de Juda, et vers tout le peuple qui était dans la ville, disant:
10 'Thus said Sennacherib king of Asshur, On what are ye trusting and abiding in the bulwark, in Jerusalem?
Voici ce que dit Sennachérib, roi des Assyriens: En qui avez-vous confiance, pour demeurer ainsi assiégés dans Jérusalem?
11 'Is not Hezekiah persuading you, to give you up to die by famine, and by thirst, saying, Jehovah our God doth deliver us from the hand of the king of Asshur?
Est-ce qu’Ézéchias ne vous trompe pas pour vous livrer à la mort par la faim et la soif, vous assurant que le Seigneur votre Dieu vous délivrera de la main du roi des Assyriens?
12 Hath not Hezekiah himself turned aside His high places, and His altars, and speaketh to Judah and to Jerusalem, saying, Before one altar ye bow yourselves, and on it ye make perfume?
N’est-ce pas cet Ezéchias qui a détruit ses hauts lieux et ses autels, et qui a ordonné à Juda et à Jérusalem, disant: C’est devant un seul autel que vous adorerez, et c’est sur cet autel que vous brûlerez de l’encens?
13 'Do ye not know what I have done — I and my fathers — to all peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands at all able to deliver their land out of my hand?
Est-ce que vous ignorez ce que j’ai fait, moi et mes pères, à tous les peuples de la terre? Est-ce que les dieux des nations et de toute la terre ont été assez forts pour délivrer leur pays de ma main?
14 Who among all the gods of these nations whom my fathers have devoted to destruction [is] he who hath been able to deliver his people out of my hand, that your God is able to deliver you out of my hand?
Quel est celui de tous les dieux des nations que mes pères ont ravagées, qui ait pu délivrer son peuple de ma main, pour que même votre Dieu puisse vous délivrer de ma main?
15 'And, now, let not Hezekiah lift you up, nor persuade you thus, nor give credence to him, for no god of any nation and kingdom is able to deliver his people from my hand, and from the hand of my fathers: also, surely your God doth not deliver you from my hand!'
Qu’Ézéchias ne vous trompe donc point, et que par une vaine persuasion il ne vous joue point: ne le croyez pas. Car si aucun dieu de toutes les nations et de tous les royaumes n’a pu délivrer son peuple de ma main ni de celle de mes pères, conséquemment même votre Dieu ne pourra pas vous délivrer de ma main.
16 And again have his servants spoken against Jehovah God, and against Hezekiah His servant,
Mais les serviteurs de Sennachérib dirent encore beaucoup d’autres choses contre le Seigneur Dieu et contre Ezéchias, son serviteur.
17 and letters he hath written to give reproach to Jehovah, God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying, 'As the gods of the nations of the lands that have not delivered their people from my hand, so the God of Hezekiah doth not deliver His people from my hand.'
Il écrivit aussi des lettres pleines de blasphèmes contre le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël, et il dit contre lui: Comme les dieux des autres nations n’ont pu délivrer leur peuple de ma main, ainsi même le Dieu d’Ezéchias ne pourra pas délivrer son peuple de cette main.
18 And they call with a great voice [in] Jewish, against the people of Jerusalem who [are] on the wall, to frighten them, and to trouble them, that they may capture the city,
De plus, d’une voix forte et en langue judaïque, il criait contre le peuple qui était sur les murs de Jérusalem, pour l’épouvanter et prendre la ville.
19 and they speak against the God of Jerusalem as against the gods of the peoples of the land — work of the hands of man.
Ainsi il parla contre le Dieu de Jérusalem comme contre les dieux des peuples de la terre, ouvrages des mains des hommes.
20 And Hezekiah the king prayeth, and Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet, concerning this, and they cry to the heavens,
Le roi Ezéchias donc, et Isaïe, le prophète, fils d’Amos, prièrent en opposition à ce blasphème, et poussèrent des cris jusqu’au ciel.
21 and Jehovah sendeth a messenger, and cutteth off every mighty one of valour — both leader and head — in the camp of the king of Asshur, and he turneth back with shame of face to his land, and entereth the house of his god, and those coming out of his bowels have caused him to fall there by the sword.
Et le Seigneur envoya un ange qui frappa tout homme vigoureux, guerrier et le prince de l’armée du roi des Assyriens; et Sennachérib retourna avec ignominie en son pays. Or, lorsqu’il fut entré dans la maison de son dieu, ses fils, qui étaient sortis de ses entrailles, le tuèrent par le glaive.
22 And Jehovah saveth Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Asshur, and from the hand of all, and He leadeth them round about;
Le Seigneur sauva ainsi Ezéchias et les habitants de Jérusalem de la main de Sennachérib, roi des Assyriens, et de la main de tous, et il leur donna le repos alentour.
23 and many are bringing in an offering to Jehovah, to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah, and he is lifted up before the eyes of all the nations after this.
Beaucoup même portaient des hosties et des sacrifices au Seigneur à Jérusalem, et des présents à Ezéchias, roi de Juda, qui a été exalté après cela devant toutes les nations.
24 In those days hath Hezekiah been sick even unto death, and he prayeth unto Jehovah, and He speaketh to him, and a wonder hath appointed for him;
En ces jours-là, Ezéchias fut malade jusqu’à la mort, et il pria le Seigneur, et le Seigneur l’exauça, et il lui en donna un signe.
25 and Hezekiah hath not returned according to the deed [done] unto him, for his heart hath been lofty, and there is wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem;
Mais Ezéchias ne rendit pas à Dieu selon les biens qu’il avait reçus, parce que son cœur s’éleva, et la colère du Seigneur s’alluma contre lui, contre Juda et contre Jérusalem.
26 and Hezekiah is humbled for the loftiness of his heart, he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the wrath of Jehovah hath not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.
Mais ensuite il s’humilia autant lui-même que les habitants de Jérusalem, de ce que son cœur s’était exalté: et c’est pourquoi la colère du Seigneur ne vint point sur eux dans les jours d’Ezéchias.
27 And Hezekiah hath riches and honour very much, and treasures he hath made to himself of silver, and of gold, and of precious stone, and of spices, and of shields, and of all [kinds] of desirable vessels,
Or Ezéchias fut riche et très illustre; il s’amassa beaucoup de trésors d’argent, d’or, de pierres précieuses, d’aromates, d’armes de tout genre, et de vases de grand prix.
28 and storehouses for the increase of corn, and new wine, and oil, and stalls for all kinds of cattle, and herds for stalls;
Il avait aussi des magasins de blé, devin et d’huile, des écuries pour toute sorte de gros bétail, et des parcs pour des troupeaux.
29 and cities he hath made for himself, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance, for God hath given to him very much substance.
Et il bâtit des villes pour lui; car il avait des troupeaux de brebis et de gros bétail innombrables, parce que le Seigneur lui avait donné des biens en très grande abondance.
30 And Hezekiah himself hath stopped the upper source of the waters of Gihon, and directeth them beneath to the west of the city of David, and Hezekiah prospereth in all his work;
C’est ce même Ezéchias qui boucha la fontaine supérieure des eaux de Gihon, et les détourna sous terre vers l’occident de la ville de David; en toutes ses œuvres il fit heureusement ce qu’il voulut.
31 and so with the ambassadors of the heads of Babylon, those sending unto him to inquire of the wonder that hath been in the land, God hath left him to try him, to know all in his heart,
Cependant dans le message des princes de Babylone qui avaient été envoyés vers lui pour s’informer du prodige qui était arrivé sur la terre. Dieu l’abandonna pour le tenter et pour faire connaître tout ce qui était en son cœur.
32 And the rest of the matters of Hezekiah, and his kind acts, lo, they are written in the vision of Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet, on the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
Mais le reste des actions d’Ezéchias et de ses miséricordes est écrit dans la vision d’Isaïe, le prophète, fils d’Amos, et dans le Livre des rois de Juda et d’Israël.
33 And Hezekiah lieth with his fathers, and they bury him in the uppermost of the graves of the sons of David, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem have done honour to him at his death, and reign doth Manasseh his son in his stead.
Ezéchias dormit avec ses pères, et on l’ensevelit au dessus du sépulcre des fils de David: tout Juda célébra ses funérailles, et tous les habitants de Jérusalem; et Manassé son fils régna en sa place.
