1 Rois 18
1 Après beaucoup de jours, la parole de Yahweh fut adressée à Elie, dans la troisième année, en ces termes: « Va, parais devant Achab, et je ferai tomber de la pluie sur la face du sol. »
So after many days the word of Yahweh came to Elijah, in the third year of the drought, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab and I will send rain on the land.”
2 Et Elie partit, pour se présenter devant Achab. La famine était devenue grande à Samarie,
Elijah went to show himself to Ahab; now the famine was severe in Samaria.
3 Achab fit appeler Abdias, chef de sa maison. — Or Abdias craignait beaucoup Yahweh,
Ahab called Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. Now Obadiah honored Yahweh very much,
4 car, lorsque Jézabel massacra les prophètes de Yahweh, Abdias prit cent prophètes et les cacha cinquante par cinquante dans des cavernes, où il les nourrit de pain et d'eau. —
for when Jezebel was killing the prophets of Yahweh, Obadiah took one hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.
5 Achab dit à Abdias: « Va par le pays vers toutes les sources d'eau et vers tous les torrents; peut-être se trouvera-t-il de l'herbe, et nous conserverons la vie aux chevaux et aux mulets, et nous n'aurons pas à abattre de bétail. »
Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the water springs and brooks. Perhaps we will find grass and save the horses and mules alive, so that we will not lose all the animals.”
6 Ils se partagèrent le pays pour le parcourir; Achab alla seul par un chemin, et Abdias alla seul par un autre chemin.
So they divided the land between them to pass through it and look for water. Ahab went one way by himself and Obadiah went another way.
7 Comme Abdias était en route, voici qu'Elie le rencontra. Abdias, l'ayant reconnu, tomba sur son visage et dit: « Est-ce toi, mon seigneur Elie? »
As Obadiah was on the road, Elijah unexpectedly met him. Obadiah recognized him and lay facedown on the ground. He said, “Is it you, my master Elijah?”
8 Il lui répondit: « C'est moi; va dire à ton maître: Voici Elie! »
Elijah answered him, “It is I. Go tell your master, 'Look, Elijah is here.'”
9 Et Abdias dit: « Quel péché ai-je commis, que tu livres ton serviteur entre les mains d'Achab, pour qu'il me fasse mourir?
Obadiah replied, “How have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, for him to kill me?
10 Yahweh, ton Dieu, est vivant! Il n'y a ni nation ni royaume où mon maître n'ait envoyé pour te chercher; et quand on disait: Elie n'est pas ici, il faisait jurer le royaume et la nation qu'on ne t'avait pas trouvé.
As Yahweh your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent men to find you. Whenever a nation or kingdom says, 'Elijah is not here,' Ahab makes them take an oath swearing that they could not find you.
11 Et maintenant tu me dis: Va dire à ton maître: Voici Elie!
Yet now you say, 'Go, tell your master that Elijah is here.'
12 Et lorsque je t'aurai quitté, l'Esprit de Yahweh te transportera je ne sais où; et j'irai informer Achab, qui ne te trouvera pas et me tuera. Cependant ton serviteur craint Yahweh dès sa jeunesse.
As soon as I am gone from you, the Spirit of Yahweh will carry you some place I do not know. Then when I go and tell Ahab, and when he cannot find you, he will kill me. Yet I, your servant, have worshiped Yahweh from my youth.
13 N'a-t-on pas dit à mon seigneur ce que j'ai fait quand Jézabel a massacré les prophètes de Yahweh? J'ai caché cent des prophètes de Yahweh, cinquante par cinquante, dans des cavernes, et je les ai nourris de pain et d'eau.
Has it not been told to you, my master, what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of Yahweh, how I hid one hundred of Yahweh's prophets by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water?
14 Et maintenant tu dis: Va dire à ton maître: Voici Elie! Il me tuera. »
Now you say to me, 'Go and tell your master that Elijah is here,' so that he will kill me.”
15 Mais Elie dit: « Yahweh des armées, devant qui je me tiens, est vivant! Aujourd'hui je me présenterai devant Achab. »
Then Elijah responded, “As Yahweh of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to Ahab today.”
16 Abdias alla à la rencontre d'Achab et lui apprit la nouvelle; et Achab se rendit au-devant d'Elie.
So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him what Elijah said. Then the king went to meet Elijah.
17 Dès qu'Achab aperçut Elie, Achab lui dit: « Toi ici, le perturbateur d'Israël? »
When Ahab saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is it you? You are the one who brings trouble to Israel!”
18 Elie répondit: « Je ne trouble point Israël; c'est toi, au contraire, et la maison de ton père, en ce que vous avez abandonné les commandements de Yahweh et que tu es allé après les Baals.
Elijah answered, “I have not brought trouble to Israel, but you and your father's family are the ones who have caused trouble by abandoning the commandments of Yahweh and by following the Baals.
19 Maintenant, envoie rassembler tout Israël auprès de moi, à la montagne du Carmel, ainsi que les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal et les quatre cents prophètes d'Astarté, qui mangent de la table de Jézabel. »
Now then, send word and gather to me all Israel at Mount Carmel, along with the 450 prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel's table.”
20 Achab envoya des messagers vers tous les enfants d'Israël, et rassembla les prophètes à la montagne du Carmel.
So Ahab sent word to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel.
21 Alors Elie s'approcha de tout le peuple et dit: « Jusques à quand clocherez-vous des deux côtés? Si Yahweh est Dieu, allez après lui; si c'est Baal, allez après lui! » Le peuple ne lui répondit rien.
Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you keep changing your mind? If Yahweh is God, follow him. But if Baal is God, then follow him.” Yet the people did not answer him a word.
22 Et Elie dit au peuple: « Je suis resté seul des prophètes de Yahweh, et il y a quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal.
Then Elijah said to the people, “I, I alone, am left as a prophet of Yahweh, but Baal's prophets are 450 men.
23 Que l'on nous donne deux taureaux; qu'ils choisissent pour eux l'un des taureaux, qu'ils le coupent par morceaux et qu'ils le placent sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu; et moi je préparerai l'autre taureau, et je le placerai sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu.
So let them give us two bulls. Let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it. Then I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under it.
24 Puis invoquez le nom de votre dieu, et moi j'invoquerai le nom de Yahweh. Le dieu qui répondra par le feu, celui-là est Dieu. » Tout le peuple répondit en disant: « C'est bien! »
Then you will call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Yahweh, and the God who answers by fire, then let him be God.” So all the people answered and said, “This is good.”
25 Elie dit aux prophètes de Baal: « Choisissez pour vous l'un des taureaux, préparez-le d'abord, car vous êtes les plus nombreux, et invoquez le nom de votre dieu, mais ne mettez pas le feu. »
So Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one bull for yourselves and prepare it first, for you are many people. Then call on the name of your god, but put no fire under the bull.”
26 Ils prirent le taureau qu'on leur donna et le préparèrent; et ils invoquèrent le nom de Baal depuis le matin jusqu'à midi, en disant: « Baal, réponds-nous! » Mais il n'y eut ni voix ni réponse. Et ils sautaient devant l'autel qu'ils avaient fait.
They took the bull that was given to them and prepared it, and they called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “Baal, hear us.” But there was no voice, nor anyone who answered. They danced around the altar they had made.
27 A midi, Elie se moqua d'eux et dit: « Criez à haute voix, car il est dieu; il est en méditation, ou il est occupé, ou il est en voyage; peut-être qu'il dort, et il se réveillera. »
At noon Elijah mocked them and said, “Shout out loudly! He is a god! Perhaps he is thinking, or is relieving himself, or he is traveling on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened.”
28 Et ils crièrent à haute voix, et ils se firent, selon leur coutume, des incisions avec des épées et avec des lances, jusqu'à ce que le sang coulât sur eux.
So they shouted more loudly, and they cut themselves, as they usually did, with swords and spears, until their blood flowed out over themselves.
29 Lorsque midi fut passé, ils prophétisèrent jusqu'au moment où l'on présente l'oblation. Mais il n'y eut ni voix, ni réponse, ni signe d'attention.
Midday passed, and they were still raving until the time of offering of the evening sacrifice, but there was no voice or anyone to answer; there was no one who paid any attention to their pleadings.
30 Elie dit à tout le peuple: « Approchez-vous de moi. » Tout le peuple s'étant approché de lui, Elie rétablit l'autel de Yahweh, qui avait été renversé.
Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me,” and all the people came near to him. Then he repaired the altar of Yahweh that was lying in ruin.
31 Elie prit douze pierres, d'après le nombre des tribus des fils de Jacob, auquel la parole de Yahweh avait été adressée en ces termes: « Israël sera ton nom. »
Elijah took twelve stones, each stone representing one of the tribes of the sons of Jacob—it was Jacob to whom the word of Yahweh came, saying, “Israel will be your name.”
32 Il bâtit avec ces pierres un autel au nom de Yahweh; puis, ayant fait autour de l'autel un fossé de la capacité de deux mesures de semence,
With the stones he built an altar in the name of Yahweh and he dug a trench around the altar large enough to contain two seahs of seeds.
33 il arrangea le bois, coupa le taureau par morceaux et le plaça sur le bois.
He arranged the wood for a fire, cut the bull in pieces, and laid the pieces of the bull on the wood. He said, “Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.”
34 Et il dit: « Remplissez d'eau quatre cruches, et versez-les sur l'holocauste et sur le bois. » Il dit: « Faites-le une seconde fois »; et ils le firent une seconde fois. Il dit: « Faites le une troisième fois »; et ils le firent une troisième fois.
Then he said, “Do it a second time,” and they did it a second time. Once more he said, “Do it a third time,” and they did it a third time.
35 L'eau coula autour de l'autel, et il fit remplir aussi d'eau le fossé.
The water ran around the altar and filled the trench.
36 A l'heure où l'on offre l'oblation du soir, Elie, le prophète, s'avança et dit: « Yahweh, Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et d'Israël, que l'on sache aujourd'hui que vous êtes Dieu en Israël, que je suis votre serviteur et que j'ai fait toutes ces choses sur votre parole.
It happened at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, “Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.
37 Exaucez-moi, Yahweh, exaucez-moi! Afin que ce peuple reconnaisse que vous, Yahweh, êtes Dieu, et que c'est vous qui ramenez leur cœur en arrière. »
Hear me, Yahweh, hear me, that these people may know that you, Yahweh, are God, and that you have turned their heart back again to yourself.”
38 Alors le feu de Yahweh tomba, et il consuma l'holocauste, le bois, les pierres et la terre, et absorba l'eau qui était dans le fossé.
Then the fire of Yahweh fell and consumed the burnt offering, as well as the wood, the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
39 Quand tout le peuple vit cela, ils tombèrent sur leur visage et ils dirent: « C'est Yahweh qui est Dieu! C'est Yahweh qui est Dieu! »
When all the people saw this, they lay facedown on the ground and said, “Yahweh, he is God! Yahweh, he is God!”
40 Et Elie leur dit: « Saisissez les prophètes de Baal; que pas un d'eux n'échappe! » Ils les saisirent, et Elie les fit descendre au torrent de Cison, où il les tua.
So Elijah said to them, “Take the prophets of Baal. Do not let one of them escape.” So they took them, and Elijah brought the prophets of Baal down to the Kishon River and killed them there.
41 Elie dit à Achab: « Monte, mange et bois; car j'entends le bruissement de la pluie. »
Elijah said to Ahab, “Get up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of much rain.”
42 Achab monta pour manger et pour boire; mais Elie monta au sommet du Carmel et, se penchant vers la terre, il mit son visage entre ses genoux,
So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. Then Elijah went up to the top of Carmel, bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees.
43 et il dit à son serviteur: « Monte, regarde du côté de la mer. » Le serviteur monta et, ayant regardé, il dit: « Il n'y a rien. » Et Elie dit: « Retourne sept fois. »
He said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” His servant went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” So Elijah said, “Go again, seven times.”
44 A la septième fois, il dit: « Voici un petit nuage, comme la paume de la main d'un homme, qui s'élève de la mer. » Et Elie dit: « Va dire à Achab: Attelle et descends, afin que la pluie ne te surprenne pas. »
At the seventh time the servant said, “Look, there is a cloud going up from the sea, as small as a man's hand.” Elijah replied, “Go up and say to Ahab, 'Make ready your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.'”
45 En peu de temps, le ciel fut assombri par les nuages et le vent, et il tomba une forte pluie; et Achab, monté sur son char, s'en retourna à Jezrahel.
It happened that in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. Ahab rode and went to Jezreel,
46 Et la main de Yahweh fut sur Elie; il se ceignit les reins et courut devant Achab, jusqu'à l'entrée de Jezrahel.
but the hand of Yahweh was on Elijah. He tucked his robe in his belt and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
