Esther 2
1 Après ces choses, la colère du roi à la longue s'assoupit; mais il ne rechercha plus la reine, se souvenant de ce qu'elle avait dit, et du jugement qu'il avait rendu contre elle.
After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus was appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.
2 Et les serviteurs du roi dirent: Que l'on cherche pour le roi des jeunes filles chastes et belles.
Then said the king’s servants that ministered to him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king:
3 Que le roi donne ses ordres aux comarques de toutes les provinces de son royaume; qu'ils choisissent des jeunes filles vierges et belles pour le gynécée de la ville de Suse; qu'on les mette entre les mains de l'eunuque du roi gardien des femmes; et qu'on leur donne là des cosmétiques et toutes sortes de soins.
And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather all the fair young virgins to Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, into the custody of Hege the king’s chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given them:
4 Puis, la femme qui plaira au roi sera reine à la place de Vasthi. Ce projet fut agréable au roi, et il fit ainsi.
And let the maiden who pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.
5 Or, il y avait en la ville de Suse un Juif qui se nommait Mardochée, fils de Jaïr, fils de Sémeï, fils de Cisée, de la tribu de Benjamin,
Now in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;
6 Qui avait été fait captif à Jérusalem, parmi ceux qu'avait emmenés Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone.
Who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captives who had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.
7 Il avait élevé une enfant, fille d'Aminadab, son oncle paternel, et elle se nommait Esther, et, ses parents étant morts, il l'avait élevée pour qu'elle fût sa femme, et la jeune fille était belle.
And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.
8 Or, lorsque l'édit du roi fut publié, beaucoup de jeunes filles furent réunies à Suse entre les mains de l'eunuque Haï. Esther fut aussi conduite chez Haï, gardien des femmes.
So it came to pass, when the king’s commandment and his decree were heard, and when many maidens were gathered at Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also to the king’s house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.
9 Et la jeune fille lui plut et elle trouva grâce à ses yeux, et il se hâta de lui donner des cosmétiques et sa part, et sept jeunes filles du palais pour la servir; il en usa bien avec elle et avec ses suivantes, dans le gynécée.
And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness from him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven choice maidens, to be given her, out of the king’s house: and he preferred her and her maids to the best place of the house of the women.
10 Et Esther ne fit connaître ni ses parents ni sa patrie, car Mardochée lui avait défendu d'en rien déclarer.
Esther had not revealed her people nor her kindred: for Mordecai had charged her that she should not make it known.
11 Et chaque jour Mardochée se promenait dans le parvis du gynécée, observant ce qui pouvait arriver à Esther.
And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women’s house, to know how Esther did, and what should become of her.
12 Or, le moment où une jeune fille entre chez le roi, arrive quand les douze mois sont accomplis, car alors les jours de la purification sont écoulés; pendant six mois, elle s'est ointe d'huile de myrrhe, et pendant six mois d'aromates et de cosmétiques de femmes.
Now when every maid’s turn had come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the law for the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, that is, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women; )
13 Enfin, on l'introduit chez le roi, et l'eunuque à qui il en donne l'ordre la conduit, pour qu'elle aille auprès de lui, du gynécée aux chambres du roi.
Then thus came every maiden to the king; whatever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women to the king’s house.
14 Elle y entre le soir, et, le lendemain, elle retourne au second gynécée où est l'eunuque Haï, gardien des femmes, et on ne la reconduit plus chez le roi, à moins qu'il ne la demande par son nom.
In the evening she went, and on the next morning she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s chamberlain, who kept the concubines: she came in to the king no more, except that the king delighted in her, and she was called by name.
15 Et quand fut accompli le temps après lequel Esther, fille d'Aminadab, oncle paternel de Mardochée, devait être présentée au roi, elle ne négligea rien de ce que lui prescrivit l'eunuque, gardien des femmes. Car il était donné à Esther de trouver grâce aux yeux de tous ceux qui la voyaient.
Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, had come to go in to the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.
16 Elle entra donc chez le roi Artaxerxès, le douzième mois qui est adar, la septième année de son règne.
So Esther was taken to king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
17 Et le roi aima Esther, et elle trouva grâce à ses yeux plus que toutes les autres vierges, et il lui mit le diadème de reine.
And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.
18 Et le roi fit un festin à tous ses amis et à tous ses grands, et la fête dura sept jours, et il célébra magnifiquement le mariage d'Esther, et il fit remise de ce qui lui était dû par les sujets de son royaume.
Then the king made a great feast to all his princes and his servants, even Esther’s feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the bounty of the king.
19 Et Mardochée servait dans le parvis.
And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai sat in the king’s gate.
20 Et Esther ne déclara point quelle était sa patrie; car Mardochée le lui avait défendu, lui prescrivant de craindre Dieu et de suivre ses commandements, comme lorsqu'elle demeurait en sa maison; et Esther ne changea rien à ses habitudes.
Esther had not yet revealed her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther performed the commandment of Mordecai, as when she was brought up with him.
21 Et les deux eunuques, chefs des gardes du corps du roi, s'affligèrent des honneurs auxquels s'élevait Mardochée, et ils cherchèrent à tuer Artaxerxès.
In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king’s gate, two of the king’s chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those who kept the door, were angry, and sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus.
22 Et Mardochée découvrit le complot, et il le dit à Esther, qui dévoila tout au roi.
And the thing was known to Mordecai, who told it to Esther the queen; and Esther informed the king of it in Mordecai’s name.
23 Or, le roi interrogea les eunuques et il les fit pendre; et il prescrivit d'écrire en un mémorial, dans les archives de la bibliothèque royale, une notice sur les bons offices de Mardochée, à sa louange.
And when enquiry was made of the matter, it was discovered; therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.
