1 Samuel 29

1 Et les Philistins réunirent toutes leurs forces à Aphek, et les Israélites campèrent à la source près de Jizréel.

Now all the troops of the Philistines were gathered together to Aphec: and Israel also camped by the fountain which is in Jezrahel.

2 Et les Princes des Philistins marchèrent par divisions de cent et de mille, et David et ses hommes prirent l'arrière-garde avec Achis.

And the lords of the Philistines marched with their hundreds and their thousands: but David and his men were in the rear with Achis.

3 Et les Princes des Philistins dirent: Qu'ont à faire ici ces Hébreux? Et Achis dit aux chefs des Philistins: N'est-ce pas David, serviteur de Saül, Roi d'Israël, qui a déjà passé avec moi des jours ou plutôt des années sans que j'aie rien trouvé à redire en lui depuis son arrivée jusqu'à ce jour?

And the princes of the Philistines said to Achis: What mean these Hebrews? And Achis said to the princes of the Philistines: Do you not know David, who was the servant of Saul the king of Israel, and hath been with me many days, or years, and I have found no fault in him, since the day that he fled over to me until this day?

4 Mais les chefs des Philistins furent irrités contre lui et lui dirent: Congédie cet homme et qu'il retourne au lieu où tu l'as consigné: qu'il ne descende pas avec nous au champ de bataille, afin qu'il ne nous fasse pas volte-face dans la mêlée; car comment regagnera-t-il la faveur de son maître? n'est-ce pas au moyen des têtes de ces hommes?

But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him, and they said to him: Let this man return, and abide in his place, which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest he be an adversary to us, when we shall begin to fight: for how can he otherwise appease his master, but with our heads?

5 N'est-ce pas ce David auquel on chantait dans les chœurs: Saül abat ses mille, et David ses dix mille?

Is not this David, to whom they sung in their dances, saying: Saul slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands?

6 Alors Achis manda David et lui dit: Par la vie de l'Éternel, tu as de la droiture, et j'aimerais à t'avoir, faisant ton service dans cette campagne, et je n'ai rien trouvé à redire en toi depuis le jour de ton entrée chez moi jusqu'aujourd'hui; mais tu n'es pas bien vu des princes.

Then Achis called David, and said to him: As the Lord liveth, thou art upright and good in my sight: and so is thy going out, and thy coming in with me in the army: and I have not found my evil in thee, since the day that thou camest to me unto this day: but thou pleasest not the lords.

7 Retourne-t-en donc et va-t'en en paix et ne fais rien qui déplaise aux Princes des Philistins.

Return therefore, and go in peace, and offend not the eyes of the princes of the Philistines.

8 Et David dit à Achis: Mais qu'ai-je donc fait, et qu'as-tu trouvé à redire en ton serviteur depuis le jour de mon entrée chez toi jusqu'aujourd'hui, pour que je ne puisse être admis, ni me battre contre les ennemis du Roi, mon maître?

And David said to Achis: But what have I done, and what hast thou found in me thy servant, from the day that I have been in thy sight until this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?

9 Et Achis répondit et dit à David: Je le sais, tu es agréable à eux comme un ange de Dieu; mais les généraux des Philistins ont dit: Il ne doit pas marcher avec nous au combat.

And Achis answering said to David: I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: but the princes of the Philistines have said: He shall not go up with us to the battle.

10 Ainsi, demain lève-toi dès le matin avec les serviteurs de ton maître venus avec toi, et levez-vous le matin quand il fera jour, et allez-vous-en!

Therefore arise in the morning, thou, and the servants of thy lord, who came with thee: and when you are up before day, and it shall begin to be light, go on your way.

11 En conséquence David se leva dès le matin avec ses hommes pour se mettre en route le matin et regagner le pays des Philistins. Et les Philistins montèrent à Jizréel.

So David and his men arose in the night, that they might set forward in the morning, and returned to the land of the Philistines: and the Philistines went up to Jezrahel.
