2 Samuel 1

1 Et dans le temps qui suivit la mort de Saül, David de retour après la défaite des Amalécites, s'arrêta deux jours à Tsiklag.

After the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag,

2 Et le troisième jour, voilà qu'il arrive un homme venant du camp et des entours de Saül, les habits déchirés et la tête couverte de poussière, et en abordant David il s'inclina jusqu'à terre et se prosterna.

on the third day, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes torn and earth on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the earth and showed respect.

3 Et David lui dit: D'où viens-tu? Et il lui répondit: Je me suis sauvé du camp d'Israël.

David said to him, “Where do you come from?” He said to him, “I have escaped out of the camp of Israel.”

4 Et David lui dit: Qu'y a-t-il eu? Mets-moi donc au fait! Et il reprit: Il y a eu fuite des troupes qui ont quitté le champ de bataille, et de plus nombre d'hommes du peuple tombés et morts, et Saül et Jonathan, son fils, sont morts aussi.

David said to him, “How did it go? Please tell me.” He answered, “The people have fled from the battle, and many of the people also have fallen and are dead. Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.”

5 Et David dit au jeune homme qui l'informait: Comment sais-tu que Saül et son fils Jonathan sont morts?

David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?”

6 Et le jeune informateur répondit: Par aventure je me trouvai sur la montagne de Gilboa, et voici, Saül s'appuyait sur sa pique, et voici, les chars et la cavalerie étaient à sa poursuite.

The young man who told him said, “As I happened by chance on Mount Gilboa, behold, Saul was leaning on his spear; and behold, the chariots and the horsemen followed close behind him.

7 Et se tournant il me vit et m'appela, et je dis: Me voici.

When he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. I answered, ‘Here I am.’

8 Et il me dit: Qui es-tu? Et je lui dis: Je suis un Amalécite.

He said to me, ‘Who are you?’ I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’

9 Et il me dit: Eh bien! approche et tue-moi! car je suis saisi du spasme, tout plein de vie que je suis encore.

He said to me, ‘Please stand beside me, and kill me, for anguish has taken hold of me because my life lingers in me.’

10 Et je m'avançai et le tuai, car je savais qu'il ne survivrait pas à sa chute et j'enlevai le diadème qu'il avait à la tête et le brassard qu'il portait au bras, et je les apporte ici à mon Seigneur.

So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.”

11 Alors David saisit ses habits et les déchira, et tous les hommes de son entourage en firent autant.

Then David took hold on his clothes and tore them; and all the men who were with him did likewise.

12 Et ils firent les actes du deuil et pleurèrent et jeûnèrent jusqu'au soir pour Saül et pour Jonathan, son fils, et pour le peuple de l'Éternel et pour ta maison d'Israël, qui étaient tombés sous l'épée.

They mourned, wept, and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

13 Et David dit au jeune informateur: D'où es-tu? Et il répondit: Je suis le fils d'un émigré Amalécite.

David said to the young man who told him, “Where are you from?” He answered, “I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite.”

14 Et David lui dit: Comment n'as-tu pas craint de prêter ta main au meurtre de l'Oint de l'Éternel?

David said to him, “Why were you not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed?”

15 Et David appela un des valets et dit: Avance et fais main basse sur lui! et il lui porta un coup qui le tua.

David called one of the young men and said, “Go near, and cut him down!” He struck him so that he died.

16 Et David lui dit: Ton sang reste sur ta tête, car ta bouche a déposé contre toi quand tu as dit: J'ai tué l'Oint de l'Éternel.

David said to him, “Your blood be on your head, for your mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have slain the LORD’s anointed.’”

17 Et David chanta cette complainte sur Saül et Jonathan, son fils,

David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son

18 il prescrivit d'apprendre aux enfants de Juda [la complainte] de l'arc; et voici, elle est transcrite dans le livre du Droiturier:

(and he commanded them to teach the children of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):

19 La fleur d'Israël sur tes monts a péri: comment des héros ont-ils succombé?

“Your glory, Israel, was slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!

20 Ne le redites pas dans Gath, ne le proclamez pas aux champs d'Askalon, de peur de réjouir des filles de Philistins, de transporter des filles d'incirconcis!

Don’t tell it in Gath. Don’t publish it in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

21 Monts de Gilboa, que sur vous il ne tombe ni pluie, ni rosée, il n'y ait plus de champs qui fournissent des offrandes! Car là fut jeté le bouclier des braves, le bouclier de Saül, que l'huile n'oignait plus.

You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain on you, and no fields of offerings; for there the shield of the mighty was defiled and cast away, the shield of Saul was not anointed with oil.

22 Devant le sang des blessés et la graisse des héros L'arc de Jonathan ne faisait pas retraite et l'épée de Saül ne rentrait pas, sans avoir porté coup.

From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, Jonathan’s bow didn’t turn back. Saul’s sword didn’t return empty.

23 Saül et Jonathan qui dans la vie s'aimaient et s'agréaient l'un à l'autre, dans la mort ne furent point séparés. Plus que les aigles ils étaient rapides, plus que les lions ils étaient vigoureux.

Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives. In their death, they were not divided. They were swifter than eagles. They were stronger than lions.

24 Filles d'Israël, donnez vos larmes à Saül qui gracieusement vous distribuait la pourpre pour vous habiller, et des joyaux d'or pour rehausser vos robes.

You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you delicately in scarlet, who put ornaments of gold on your clothing.

25 Comment des héros dans le combat ont-ils succombé, Jonathan fut-il percé sur tes montagnes?

How the mighty have fallen in the middle of the battle! Jonathan was slain on your high places.

26 Je te regrette, ô Jonathan! mon frère! car tu avais un attrait puissant pour moi. Je préférais ton amour à l'amour des femmes.

I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan. You have been very pleasant to me. Your love to me was wonderful, surpassing the love of women.

27 Comment des héros ont-ils succombé, et les armures guerrières se sont-elles perdues!

How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war have perished!”
