Actes 17
1 Paul et Silas passèrent par Amphipolis et par Apollonie; puis ils vinrent à Thessalonique, où les Juifs avaient une synagogue.
After passing through Amphipolis and Apollonia, Paul and Silas came to Thessalonica. Here the Jews had a Synagogue;
2 Selon sa coutume, Paul s'y rendit, et il discuta avec eux pendant trois sabbats,
and, following his usual custom, Paul joined them, and for three Sabbaths addressed them, drawing his arguments from the Scriptures.
3 expliquant et démontrant, par les Ecritures, qu'il fallait que le Christ souffrît, et qu'il ressuscitât des morts. Ce Christ, disait-il, c'est Jésus que je vous annonce.
He laid before them and explained that the Christ must undergo suffering and rise from the dead; and “It is this man,” he declared, “who is the Christ — this Jesus about whom I am telling you.”
4 Quelques-uns d'entre eux furent persuadés; et ils se joignirent à Paul et à Silas, ainsi qu'une grande multitude de Grecs craignant Dieu, et à plusieurs femmes, des premières de la ville.
Some of the people were convinced, and threw in their lot with Paul and Silas, as did also a large body of Greeks who were accustomed to join in the Jewish services, and a great number of women belonging to the leading families.
5 Mais les Juifs, pleins de jalousie, prirent avec eux quelques mauvais sujets des rues, et, ameutant la foule, ils jetèrent le trouble dans la ville. Ils assaillirent la maison de Jason, et ils y cherchèrent Paul et Silas pour les amener devant le peuple.
But the Jews, becoming jealous, engaged some worthless fellows from the streets, and, getting a mob together, kept the city in an uproar. They attacked Jason’s house, with the intention of bringing Paul and Silas before the Popular Assembly;
6 Ne les ayant pas trouvés, ils traînèrent Jason et quelques-uns des frères devant les magistrats de la ville, en criant: Ces gens, qui ont bouleversé le monde, les voilà maintenant ici!
and, not finding them there, they proceeded to drag Jason and some of the Brethren before the City Magistrates, shouting out: “These men, who have turned the world upside down, have now come here,
7 Jason les a reçus chez lui. Or, ils sont tous rebelles aux édits de César, puisqu'ils disent qu'il y a un autre roi, Jésus.
and have been harboured by Jason! They say that some one else is king — a man called Jesus!”
8 Ces paroles émurent la foule et les magistrats.
On hearing this, the people and the City Magistrates were much concerned;
9 Ceux-ci, cependant, après avoir exigé une caution de Jason et des autres, les relâchèrent.
and, before letting them go, they took bail from Jason and the others.
10 Aussitôt, les frères firent partir de nuit Paul et Silas pour Bérée. Lorsqu'ils furent arrivés, ils entrèrent dans la synagogue des Juifs.
That very night the Brethren sent Paul and Silas off to Beroea; and on reaching that place, they went to the Jewish Synagogue.
11 Ceux-ci eurent des sentiments plus nobles que ceux de Thessalonique, et ils accueillirent la Parole avec beaucoup d'empressement, examinant tous les jours les Écritures, pour vérifier ce qu'on leur disait.
These Jews of Beroea were better disposed than those in Thessalonica, for they welcomed the Message with great readiness, and daily examined the Scriptures to see if what was said was true.
12 Plusieurs d'entre eux crurent, ainsi que des femmes grecques de haut rang, et des hommes en assez grand nombre.
As a consequence, many of them became believers in Christ, besides a considerable number of Greek women of position, and of men also.
13 Mais quand les Juifs de Thessalonique surent que Paul annonçait aussi la parole de Dieu à Bérée, ils y vinrent pour répandre l'agitation et le trouble parmi le peuple.
But, when the Jews of Thessalonica found out that God’s Message had been delivered by Paul at Beroea, they came there too, exciting and disturbing the minds of the people.
14 Aussitôt, les frères firent partir Paul, dans la direction de la mer, tandis que Silas et Timothée restaient à Bérée.
Immediately upon that, the Brethren sent Paul off on his way to the sea coast, but both Silas and Timothy stayed behind in Beroea.
15 Ceux qui accompagnaient Paul le conduisirent jusqu'à Athènes; puis ils s'en retournèrent, apportant à Silas et à Timothée l'ordre de le rejoindre au plus tôt.
The friends who escorted Paul took him as far as Athens, and, after receiving a message for Silas and Timothy to join him as quickly as possible, they started on their return.
16 Pendant que Paul les attendait à Athènes, il avait le coeur outré à la vue de cette ville toute pleine d'idoles.
While Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his heart was stirred at seeing the whole city full of idols.
17 Il discutait donc dans la synagogue avec les Juifs et les prosélytes, et, chaque jour, sur la place publique, avec ceux qui s'y rencontraient.
So he argued in the Synagogue with the Jews and with those who joined in their worship, as well as daily in the public Square with those who happened to be there.
18 Quelques philosophes épicuriens et stoïciens conféraient aussi avec lui. Les uns disaient: Que veut dire ce discoureur? Et d'autres: Il semble annoncer des divinités étrangères. — car Paul leur annonçait Jésus et la résurrection. —
Among others, some Epicurean and Stoic Philosophers joined issue with him. Some would ask “What is this prater wanting to make out?”, while others would say “He seems to be a Preacher of foreign Deities.” (This was because he was telling the Good News about Jesus and the Resurrection).
19 Ils le prirent avec eux et le menèrent à l'Aréopage, en lui disant: Pourrions-nous savoir quelle est cette nouvelle doctrine que tu enseignes?
So they laid hold of him and took him to the Court of Areopagus. “May we hear,” they asked, “what new teaching this is which you are giving?
20 Car tu nous fais entendre des choses étranges. Nous voudrions bien savoir ce que cela veut dire.
For you are bringing some strange things to our notice, and we should like to know what they mean.”
21 Or, tous les Athéniens, aussi bien que les étrangers qui séjournaient à Athènes ne s'occupaient qu'à dire ou à écouter les nouvelles.
(All Athenians and the foreigners staying in the city found no time for anything else but telling, or listening to, the last new thing.)
22 Alors Paul, se tenant au milieu de l'Aréopage, dit: Athéniens, je vois qu'à tous égards vous êtes, pour ainsi dire, dévots à l'excès.
So Paul took his stand in the middle of the Court, and said — “Men of Athens, on every hand I see signs of your being very devout.
23 Car, en parcourant votre ville, et en considérant les objets de votre culte, j'ai trouvé un autel portant cette inscription: Au dieu inconnu. Eh bien, ce que vous honorez sans le connaître, c'est ce que je vous annonce!
For as I was going about, looking at your sacred shrines, I came upon an altar with this inscription — ‘To an Unknown God.’ What, therefore, you worship in ignorance, that I am now proclaiming to you.
24 Le Dieu qui a fait le monde, et tout ce qui s'y trouve, étant le Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, n'habite pas dans des temples bâtis par la main des hommes.
The God who made the world and all things that are in it — he, Lord as he is of Heaven and Earth, does not dwell in temples made by hands,
25 Il n'est pas non plus servi par des mains humaines, comme s'il avait besoin de quoi que ce soit, lui qui donne à tous la vie, la respiration, tous les biens.
nor yet do human hands minister to his wants, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives, to all, life, and breath, and all things.
26 Il a fait naître d'un seul homme toutes les nations, et il les a fait habiter sur toute l'étendue de la terre, ayant fixé le temps précis de leur existence et les limites de leur demeure,
He made all races of the earth’s surface — fixing a time for their rise and fall, and the limits of their settlements —
27 afin qu'elles cherchent Dieu et s'efforcent de le trouver comme en tâtonnant, quoiqu'il ne soit pas loin de chacun de nous.
That they might search for God, if by any means they might feel their way to him and find him. And yet he is not really far from any one of us;
28 Car c'est en lui que nous avons la vie, le mouvement et l'être, comme l'ont dit quelques-uns de vos poètes: «Nous sommes aussi de sa race!»
for in him we live and move and are. To use the words of some of your own poets — ‘His offspring, too, are we.’
29 Étant donc de la race de Dieu, nous ne devons pas croire que la divinité soit semblable à l'or, à l'argent ou à la pierre, sculptés par l'art et le génie de l'homme.
Therefore, as the offspring of God, we must not think that the Deity has any resemblance to anything made of gold, or silver, or stone — a work of human art and imagination.
30 C'est pourquoi, ne tenant pas compte de ces temps d'ignorance, Dieu invite maintenant tous les hommes, en tous lieux, à se repentir,
True, God looked with indulgence on the days of men’s ignorance, but now he is announcing to every one everywhere the need for repentance,
31 parce qu'il a fixé un jour, où il doit juger le monde avec justice, par l'Homme qu'il a établi pour cela; et il en a donné à tous une preuve certaine en le ressuscitant des morts.
because he has fixed a day on which he intends to ‘judge the world with justice,’ by a man whom he has appointed — and of this he has given all men a pledge by raising this man from the dead.”
32 Quand ils entendirent parler de résurrection des morts, les uns se moquèrent, les autres dirent: Nous t'entendrons là-dessus une autre fois.
On hearing of a resurrection of the dead, some began jeering, but others said that they would hear what he had to say about that another time.
33 C'est ainsi que Paul se retira du milieu d'eux.
And so Paul left the Court.
34 Il y eut cependant quelques personnes qui se joignirent à lui et qui crurent: de ce nombre étaient Denis, membre de l'Aréopage, une femme nommée Damaris, et d'autres encore avec eux.
There were, however, some men who joined him, and became believers in Christ. Among them were Dionysius, a member of the Court of Areopagus, a woman named Damaris, and several others.
