Philippiens 1

1 Paul et Timothée, serviteurs de Jésus-Christ, à tous les saints en Jésus-Christ, qui sont à Philippes, ainsi qu'aux évêques et aux diacres.

To all Christ’s people at Philippi, with the supervisors and assistants, from Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus.

2 Que la grâce et la paix vous soient données de la part de Dieu, notre Père, et du Seigneur Jésus-Christ!

May God, our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ bless you, and give you peace.

3 Je rends grâces à mon Dieu, toutes les fois que je me souviens de vous;

Every recollection that I have of you is a cause of thanksgiving to God,

4 et, dans toutes les prières que je fais pour vous tous, je prie toujours avec joie,

always, in every prayer that I offer for you all – my prayers are full of joy –

5 à cause de la part que vous avez prise aux progrès de l'Évangile, depuis le premier jour jusqu'à maintenant,

because of the share that you have had in spreading the good news, from the first day that you received it until now.

6 — étant persuadé que celui qui a commencé en vous cette bonne oeuvre, en poursuivra l'achèvement jusqu'au jour de Jésus-Christ.

For of this I am confident, that he who began a good work in you will complete it in readiness for the day of Jesus Christ.

7 Il est bien juste que j'éprouve au sujet de vous tous de tels sentiments; car je vous porte dans mon coeur, vous qui, soit dans mes liens, soit dans la défense et la confirmation de l'Évangile, avez tous participé à la grâce qui m'a été accordée.

And, indeed, I am justified in feeling like this about you all; because you have a warm place in my heart – you who all, both in my imprisonment and in the work of defending and establishing the good news, shared my privilege with me.

8 Aussi Dieu m'est-il témoin que je vous chéris tous avec la tendresse de Jésus-Christ.

God will bear me witness how I yearn for you all with the tenderness of Christ Jesus.

9 Et ce que je demande dans mes prières, c'est que votre charité abonde encore de plus en plus, avec la connaissance et tout le discernement nécessaire,

And what I pray for is this – that your love may grow yet stronger and stronger, with increasing knowledge and all discernment,

10 pour bien apprécier la différence des choses, afin que vous soyez purs et irrépréhensibles pour le jour de Christ,

until you are able to appreciate all moral distinctions. And I pray, too, that you may be kept pure and blameless against the day of Christ,

11 portant en abondance les fruits de la justice, qui viennent de Jésus-Christ, à la gloire et à la louange de Dieu.

bearing a rich harvest of that righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

12 Or, je veux que vous sachiez, frères, que ce qui m'est arrivé a plutôt contribué aux progrès de l'Évangile,

Friends, I want you to realise that what has happened to me has actually served to forward the good news.

13 au point que, dans tout le prétoire et partout ailleurs, il est devenu manifeste. que je suis prisonnier pour Christ.

It has even become evident, not only to all the imperial guard, but to everyone else, that it is for Christ’s sake that I am in chains.

14 Et la plupart des frères, ayant, à cause de mes liens, une plus grande hardiesse dans le Seigneur, osent annoncer sans crainte la parole de Dieu.

And besides this, most of our fellow followers have gained confidence in the Lord through my chains, and now venture with far greater freedom to speak of God’s message fearlessly.

15 Quelques-uns, il est vrai, prêchent le Christ dans un esprit d'envie et de dispute; mais d'autres aussi le font dans des dispositions bienveillantes.

It is true that some do proclaim the Christ out of jealousy and opposition, but there are others who proclaim him from goodwill.

16 Ceux-ci agissent par affection; ils savent que je suis établi pour la défense de l'Évangile.

The latter do it from love for me, knowing that I have been appointed to plead the cause of the good news.

17 Ceux-là, poussés par l'esprit de parti, annoncent le Christ dans des intentions qui ne sont pas pures, croyant ajouter un surcroît d'affliction à mes liens.

The former spread the news of the Christ in a factious spirit, and not sincerely, thinking to add to the pain of my chains.

18 Qu'importe! De quelque manière que ce soit, avec un zèle apparent ou avec sincérité. Christ est annoncé: c'est de quoi je me réjouis, et je m'en réjouirai encore.

But what of that? Only that in some way or other, either with assumed or with real earnestness, Christ is being made known; and at that I rejoice.

19 Car je sais que cela tournera à mon salut, grâce à vos prières et au secours de l'Esprit de Jésus-Christ.

Yes, and I will rejoice, for I know that, through your prayers and through a rich supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, all this will make for my salvation.

20 J'ai cette ferme espérance que je ne serai rendu confus en rien, mais que, maintenant comme toujours, je parlerai avec une entière liberté, et qu'ainsi Christ sera glorifié dans mon corps, soit par ma vie, soit par ma mort.

And this will fulfil my earnest expectation and hope that I will have no cause for shame, but that, with unfailing courage, now as before, Christ will be honoured in my body, whether by my life or by my death,

21 Car Christ est ma vie, et la mort m'est un gain.

for to me life is Christ, and death is gain.

22 S'il vaut la peine pour moi de continuer à vivre dans la chair, et ce que je dois préférer, je ne saurais le dire.

But what if the life here in the body – if this brings me fruit from my labours? Then which to choose I cannot tell! I am sorely perplexed either way!

23 Je suis pressé des deux côtés, mon désir étant de partir pour être avec Christ, ce qui est de beaucoup préférable;

My own desire is to depart and be with Christ, for this would be far better.

24 mais il est nécessaire pour vous que je demeure dans ce corps.

But, for your sakes, it may be more needful that I should still remain here in the body.

25 C'est là ma ferme confiance; aussi ai-je la certitude que je resterai et que je demeurerai avec vous tous, pour le progrès et la joie de votre foi,

Yes, I am confident that this is so, and therefore I am sure that I will stay, and stay near you all, to promote your progress and joy in the faith;

26 afin que, à mon retour auprès de vous, vous ayez toujours plus sujet, par rapport à moi, de vous glorifier en Jésus-Christ.

so that, when you once more have me among you, you, in your union with Christ Jesus, may find in me fresh cause for exultation.

27 Seulement, conduisez-vous d'une manière digne de l'Évangile du Christ, afin que, soit que je vienne vous voir ou que je sois absent, j'apprenne que vous demeurez fermes dans un même esprit, combattant d'une même âme pour la foi de l'Évangile,

Under all circumstances let your lives be worthy of the good news of the Christ: so that, whether I come and see you, or whether I hear of your affairs at a distance, I may know that you are standing firm, animated by one spirit, and joining with one heart in a common struggle for the faith taught by the good news,

28 sans vous laisser intimider en rien par les adversaires: ce qui est un signe de perdition pour eux, mais de salut pour vous. Et cela est voulu de Dieu,

without ever shrinking from your opponents. To them this will be a sign of their destruction and of your salvation – a sign from God.

29 lui qui vous a fait la grâce, par rapport à Christ, non seulement de croire en lui, mais encore de souffrir pour lui,

For, on behalf of Christ, you have had the privilege granted you, not only of trusting in him, but also of suffering on his behalf.

30 en soutenant le même combat que vous m'avez vu soutenir, et que je soutiens encore, comme vous l'avez appris.

You will be engaged in the same hard struggle as that which you once saw me waging, and which you hear that I am waging still.
