2 Chroniques 14

1 Abia dormit ensuite avec ses pères, et on l’ensevelit dans la cité de David, et son fils Asa régna en sa place; et, durant ses jours, la terre se reposa pendant dix ans.

So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David, and Asa his son reigned in his stead, —in his days, the land rested ten years.

2 Or Asa fit ce qui était bon et agréable en la présence de son Dieu: il détruisit les autels du culte étranger et les hauts lieux;

And Asa did that which was good and that which was right, in the eyes of Yahweh his God;

3 Il brisa aussi les statues, coupa les bois sacrés;

and took away the foreign altars, and the high places, —and brake in pieces the pillars, and cut in twain the Sacred Stems;

4 Et commanda à Juda de chercher le Seigneur Dieu de leurs pères, et d’observer la loi et tous les commandements.

and bade Judah seek Yahweh, God of their fathers, -and execute the law, and the commandment;

5 Et il enleva de toutes les villes de Juda les autels et les temples, et il régna en paix.

and removed from all the cities of Judah, the high places, and the sun-images, —and the kingdom became quiet before him.

6 Il bâtit aussi des villes fortifiées dans Juda, parce qu’il était tranquille, et qu’aucune guerre ne s’était élevée de son temps, le Seigneur lui accordant la paix.

And he built cities of defence, in Judah, —for the land had quiet, nor was there near him any war, in these years, because Yahweh had given him rest.

7 C’est pourquoi il dit à Juda: Bâtissons ces villes, entourons-les de murs, et fortifions-les de tours, de portes et de serrures, pendant que tout est en repos du côté des guerres, parce que nous avons cherché le Seigneur Dieu de nos pères, et qu’il nous a donné la paix tout autour. Ils bâtirent donc, et, pendant la construction, il n’y eut aucun empêchement.

Therefore said he to Judah, Let us build these cities, and let us surround them with walls and towers, doors and bars, while the land is yet before us, for we have sought Yahweh our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built, and prospered.

8 Or Asa eut dans son armée trois cent mille hommes de Juda, portant des boucliers et des piques; mais de Benjamin deux cent quatre-vingt mille scutaires et archers: tous ces hommes étaient très vaillants.

And it came to pass that, Asa, had a force bearing shield and spear, out of Judah, three hundred thousand, and, out of Benjamin, such as bare a buckler and trode a bow, two hundred and eighty thousand, —all these, were heroes of valour.

9 Cependant Zara, l’Ethiopien, sortit contre eux avec son armée d’un million d’hommes et trois cents chariots, et il vint jusqu’à Marésa.

Then came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian, with a force of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots, —and he came as far as Mareshah.

10 Mais Asa alla au-devant de lui, et rangea son armée en bataille dans la vallée de Séphata, qui est près de Marésa;

And Asa went out to meet him, —and they set in array for battle, in the valley of Zaphonah, at Mareshah.

11 Et il invoqua le Seigneur son Dieu, et dit: Seigneur, il n’y a pour vous aucune différence de secourir avec un petit nombre ou un très grand nombre: secourez-nous, Seigneur notre Dieu, car c’est en vous et en votre nom qu’ayant confiance, nous sommes venus contre cette multitude. Seigneur, vous êtes notre Dieu; qu’un homme ne l’emporte pas sur vous.

Then Asa cried out unto Yahweh his God, and said, O Yahweh, it is, nothing with thee, to help whether with many or with such as have no strength. Help us, O Yahweh our God, for, on thee, do we lean, and, in thy name, have we come against this multitude, —O Yahweh! our God, thou art, let not, weak man, have power against thee.

12 C’est pourquoi le Seigneur épouvanta les Ethiopiens devant Asa et Juda; et les Ethiopiens s’enfuirent.

So Yahweh smote the Ethiopians, before Asa, and before Judah, —and the Ethiopians fled.

13 Et Asa les poursuivit, ainsi que le peuple qui était avec lui, jusqu’à Gérare; et les Ethiopiens périrent jusqu’à une entière extermination, parce qu’ils furent brisés, le Seigneur les taillant en pièces, pendant que l’armée d’Asa combattait. Ainsi les Israélites remportèrent beaucoup de dépouilles,

And Asa and the people that were with him pursued as far as to Gerar, and the Ethiopians fell, so that there was no way for them to recover, for they were routed before Yahweh, and before him host, —and they carried away exceeding much spoil.

14 Et ils frappèrent toutes les villes autour de Gérare; car une grande terreur avait saisi tout le monde; et ils pillèrent les villes, et emportèrent un grand butin.

And they smote all the cities round shout Gerar, for the dread of Yahweh was upon them, —and they plundered all the cities, for, great plunder, was there in them.

15 Mais détruisant même les parcs de brebis, ils prirent une multitude infinie de menu bétail et de chameaux, et ils revinrent à Jérusalem.

Moreover also, the tents of the cattle, they smote, —and carried off sheep in abundance, and camels, and returned to Jerusalem.
