Daniel 1
1 Im dritten Jahr der Herrschaft Jojakims, des Judakönigs, kam Nebukadrezar, der Babelkönig, nach Jerusalem und schloß es ein.
In the third year of the reign of Jehoyakim the king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
2 Da gab der Herr den Judakönig Jojakim mitsamt den besten Stücken aus dem Gotteshaus in seine Hand. Er brachte diese in das Sinearland in seines Gottes Haus. Doch die Geräte brachte er ins Schatzhaus seines Gottes.
And the Lord gave up into his hand Yehoyakim the king of Judah, with part of the vessels of the house of God: and he brought them into the land of Shin'ar into the house of his god, namely, he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god.
3 Und da befahl der König dem Obersten der Kämmerlinge, Aspenaz, er solle von den Söhnen Israels aus königlichem wie aus adligem Geblüt
And the king said unto Ashpenas, the chief of his eunuchs, that he should bring out of the children of Israel, and of the royal seed, and of the nobles,
4 ihm Knaben bringen, an denen gar nichts auszusetzen sei, von schönem Angesicht, in allem Wissen wohl bewandert, kenntnisreich und gut erzogen, die die Fähigkeit besäßen, im Palast des Königs aufzuwarten, damit er sie in der Chaldäer Schrift und Sprache unterrichten lassen könne.
[Certain] lads in whom there should be no kind of blemish, but who should be handsome in appearance, and intelligent in all wisdom, and acquainted with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as should have the ability to serve in the king's palace, and that these should be taught the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.
5 Auch wies der König ihnen ihren Unterhalt für jeden Tag vom königlichen Tische an und von dem Weine, den er selber trank, daß sie, drei Jahre lang gut ausgebildet, in die königlichen Dienste treten könnten.
And the king ordered for them a daily provision for its day of the king's food, and of the wine which he drank, and to educate them three years, so that at the end thereof they should serve before the king.
6 Darunter waren Daniel und Ananias, Misael und Azarias aus dem Stamme Juda.
Now there were among these of the children of Judah, Daniel, Chananyah, Mishael, and 'Azaryah.
7 Der Oberkämmerer gab ihnen andre Namen. Den Daniel hieß er Baltasar, den Ananias Sidrach, Misach den Misael, Abdenago den Azarias.
And the chief of the eunuchs assigned them names; and he assigned to Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Chananyah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to 'Azaryah, of 'Abed-nego.
8 Doch Daniel nahm sich im Herzen vor, sich weder durch des Königs Speise noch durch den Wein, den jener trank, unrein zu machen. Und so erbat er sich vom Oberkämmerer, daß er sich nicht unrein machen müsse.
But Daniel resolved in his heart that he would not defile himself with the food of the king, nor with the wine which he drank: and therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not need to defile himself.
9 Und Gott ließ Daniel beim Oberkämmerer Nachsicht und Gnade finden.
And God gave Daniel kindness and mercy before the chief of the eunuchs.
10 Doch sprach der Oberkämmerer zu Daniel: "Ich fürchte meinen Herrn, den König, der euch Speis und Trank bestimmte. Fänd er, daß euere Gesichter schmächtiger als die der andern Knaben eures Alters wären, so brächtet ihr beim König mich um meinen Kopf."
And the chief of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath ordered your food and your drink; for why should he see your face sadder looking than that of the lads who are of your age? and ye would thus endanger my head with the king.
11 Darauf sprach Daniel zum Wächter, den der Oberkämmerer über Daniel und Ananias, Misael und Azarias gesetzt:
Then said Daniel to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had given charge over Daniel, Chananyah, Mishael, and 'Azaryah,
12 "Versuch es bitte doch zehn Tage lang mit deinen Knechten. Man gebe nur Gemüse uns zu essen und nur Wasser uns zu trinken!
Prove, I beseech thee, thy servants, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat, and water to drink;
13 Besieh dann unsere Gesichter und die der andern Knaben, die von der königlichen Kost genießen! Und je nachdem, wie dein Befund ausfällt, magst du mit deinen Knechten dann verfahren!"
And then let our countenances be looked at before thee, and the countenance of the lads that eat the food of the king: and as thou mayest see [fitting], so deal with thy servants.
14 Auf diese Rede hin versuchte er's zehn Tage lang mit ihnen.
And he hearkened unto them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
15 Nach Ablauf der zehn Tage aber waren ihre Angesichter sichtlich schöner wie auch voller als die aller andern Knaben, die von der königlichen Speise zu genießen pflegten.
And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared better and fuller in flesh than [that of] all the lads who ate the food of the king.
16 So ließ fortan der Wächter ihre Speise wegnehmen samt dem Wein, den sie genießen sollten; er brachte ihnen dafür nur Gemüse.
And the steward took away their [apportioned] food, and the wine that they were to drink, and gave them vegetables.
17 Doch den vier Knaben gab die Gottheit Wissen und Verständnis für jede Schrift und Wissenschaft; dem Daniel Verständnis auch für jederart Gesichte und für Träume.
But as regardeth all these four lads, God gave them knowledge and intelligence in all learning and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18 Und nach Verlauf der Zeit, nach der der König ihre Vorstellung befohlen, stellte sie der Oberkämmerer Nebukadrezar vor.
And at the end of the days [after] which the king had said that they should be presented, the chief of the eunuchs presented them before Nebuchadnezzar.
19 Da unterredete der König sich mit ihnen, und unter allen andern fand sich keiner so wie Daniel und Ananias, Misael und Azarias.
And the king spoke with them; and there was not found among them all any one like Daniel, Chananyah, Mishael, and 'Azaryah: and so they served before the king.
20 Sooft der König sie befragte in den Fällen, bei denen es auf Weisheit ankam und auf Einsicht, da fand er sie in zehnfach größerem Maß bei ihnen als bei den Zauberern und Wahrsagern in seinem ganzen Reich.
And in every matter of wise understanding, which the king required of them, he found them ten times superior above all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his kingdom.
21 Und Daniel erlebte noch das erste Jahr des Königs Cyrus.
And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
