Lukas 14
1 An einem Sabbat ging er einmal in das Haus eines angesehenen Pharisäers zum Essen; sie gaben auf ihn acht.
On one occasion, as Jesus was going, on a Sabbath into the house of one of the leading Pharisees to dine, they were watching him closely.
2 Und siehe, da war vor ihm ein Mann, der wassersüchtig war.
There he saw before him a man who was suffering from dropsy.
3 Und Jesus fragte die Gesetzeslehrer und die Pharisäer: "Ist es erlaubt, am Sabbat zu heilen oder nicht?"
‘Is it allowable,’ said Jesus, addressing the students of the Law and the Pharisees, ‘to work a cure on the Sabbath, or is it not?’
4 Sie schwiegen. Da faßte er ihn an, heilte ihn und hieß ihn fortgehen.
They remained silent. Jesus took hold of the man and cured him, and sent him away.
5 Sodann sprach er zu ihnen: "Wenn einem unter euch sein Sohn oder sein Ochs in einen Brunnen fällt, wird er ihn nicht sofort herausziehen, auch am Sabbattag?"
And he said to them, ‘Which of you, finding that your son or your ox has fallen into a well, will not immediately pull them out on the Sabbath day?’
6 Sie konnten ihm darauf nichts erwidern.
And they could not make any answer to that.
7 Als er nun wahrnahm, wie sich die Geladenen die ersten Plätze suchten, trug er ihnen dieses Gleichnis vor:
Observing that the guests were choosing the best places for themselves, Jesus told them this parable –
8 "Wenn du von jemand zur Hochzeit eingeladen bist, so suche dir nicht den ersten Platz heraus; es könnte ja ein Vornehmerer als du von jenem eingeladen sein.
‘When you are invited by anyone to a wedding banquet, do not seat yourself in the best place. Someone of higher rank might have been invited by your host;
9 Käme alsdann der, der dich und ihn geladen hat, und sagte zu dir: 'Mach diesem Platz!', so müßtest du mit Schande zum letzten Platz gehen.
and the host who invited you both will come and say to you “Make room for this person,” and then you will begin in confusion to take the lowest place.
10 Bist du eingeladen, so gehe hin und setze dich auf den letzten Platz. Kommt dann dein Gastgeber und sagt zu dir: 'Freund, rücke höher hinauf!', dann bist du vor allen deinen Tischgenossen geehrt.
No, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place, so that, when the host who has invited you comes, he may say to you “Friend, come higher up”; and then you will be honoured in the eyes of all your fellow guests.
11 Denn jeder, der sich selbst erhöht, wird erniedrigt werden, und wer sich selbst erniedrigt, wird erhöht werden."
For everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and everyone who humbles themselves will be exalted.’
12 Er sagte aber auch zu seinem Gastgeber: "Wenn du ein Mittags- oder Abendmahl bereitest, so lade nicht deine Freunde und deine Brüder ein, auch nicht die Verwandten noch reiche Nachbarsleute; sonst laden sie dich wieder ein und halten so dich schadlos.
Then Jesus went on to say to the man who had invited him, ‘When you give a breakfast or a dinner, do not ask your friends, or your brothers or sisters, or your relatives, or rich neighbours, because they might invite you in return, and so you should be repaid.
13 Wenn du ein Gastmahl gibst, so lade vielmehr Bettler, Krüppel, Lahme, Blinde dazu ein.
No, when you entertain, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;
14 Alsdann wohl dir; denn diese können dich nicht schadlos halten, und es wird dir vergolten werden bei der Auferstehung der Gerechten."
and then you will be happy indeed, since they cannot reward you; for you will be rewarded at the resurrection of the just.’
15 Als einer von den Tischgenossen dies hörte, sprach er zu ihm: "Ja, selig, wer im Reiche Gottes speisen wird."
One of the guests heard what he said and exclaimed, ‘Happy will be the person who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!’
16 Darauf sprach er zu ihm: "Ein Mann bereitete ein großes Gastmahl und lud viele dazu ein.
But Jesus said to him, ‘A man was once giving a great dinner. He invited many people,
17 Als die Stunde des Mahles gekommen war, schickte er seinen Knecht aus und ließ den Eingeladenen sagen: 'Kommt, es ist schon bereit!'
and sent his servant, when it was time for the dinner, to say to those who had been invited “Come, for everything is now ready.”
18 Da fingen sie insgesamt an, sich zu entschuldigen. Der erste sprach zu ihm: 'Ich habe mir ein Gut gekauft und muß nun hin, mir es anzusehen; ich bitte dich, halte mich für entschuldigt!'
They all with one accord began to ask to be excused. The first said to the servant “I have bought a field and am obliged to go and look at it. I must ask you to consider me excused.”
19 Ein anderer sprach: 'Ich habe fünf Paar Ochsen gekauft und gehe hin, diese zu erproben; ich bitte dich, halte mich für entschuldigt!'
The next said “I have bought five pairs of bullocks, and I am on my way to try them. I must ask you to consider me excused”;
20 Ein dritter sprach: 'Ich habe mir ein Weib genommen und kann deshalb nicht kommen.'
while the next said “I am just married, and for that reason I am unable to come.”
21 Der Knecht kam zurück und sagte dies seinem Herrn. Da ward der Hausherr zornig und befahl dem Knecht: 'Gehe eilends auf die Straßen und Gassen der Stadt und hole die Bettler, Krüppel, Blinden, Lahmen hier herein.'
On his return the servant told his master all these answers. Then in anger the owner of the house said to his servant “Go out at once into the streets and alleys of the town, and bring in here the poor, and the crippled, and the blind, and the lame.”
22 'Herr', meldete der Knecht, 'dein Befehl ist erfüllt; doch ist immer noch Platz übrig.'
Presently the servant said “Sir, your order has been carried out, and still there is room.”
23 Da sprach der Herr zum Knechte: 'Dann gehe an die Wege und die Zäune und nötige sie hereinzukommen, damit mein Haus ganz voll werde.
“Go out,” the master said, “into the roads and hedgerows, and make people come in, so that my house may be filled;
24 Doch dies sage ich euch: Nicht einer jener Männer, die geladen waren, soll mein Mahl verkosten.'"
for I tell you all that not one of those people who were invited will taste my dinner.”’
25 Und große Scharen folgten ihm. Er wandte sich an sie und sprach zu ihnen:
One day, when great crowds of people were walking with Jesus, he turned and said to them,
26 "Wenn einer zu mir kommt und Vater, Mutter, Weib und Kind, Brüder und Schwestern, ja, selbst sein eigenes Leben ihm nicht gleichgültig erscheinen, der kann nicht mein Jünger sein.
‘If any one comes to me and does not hate their father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, yes and even their life, he can be no disciple of mine.
27 Und wer sein Kreuz nicht trägt und mir nicht folgt, der kann nicht mein Jünger sein.
Whoever does not carry their own cross, and walk in my steps, can be no disciple of mine.
28 Wenn einer von euch einen Turm erbauen will, setzt er sich dann nicht vorher hin, die Kosten zu berechnen, ob er auch die Mittel zur Ausführung habe?
Why, which of you, when you want to build a tower, does not first sit down and reckon the cost, to see if you have enough to complete it? –
29 Wenn er den Grund legen würde und könnte den Bau nicht vollenden, so würden alle, die es sehen, ihn verspotten und sagen:
Otherwise, if you have laid the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will laugh at you,
30 'Der Mensch hat einen Bau begonnen, ihn aber nicht zu Ende führen können.'
and say “Here is a person who began to build and was not able to finish!”
31 Oder, wenn ein König gegen einen anderen König zu Felde ziehen will, setzt er sich dann nicht vorher hin und überlegt, ob er mit Zehntausend dem entgegentreten kann, der mit Zwanzigtausend gegen ihn heranrückt?
Or what king, when he is setting out to fight another king, does not first sit down and consider if with ten thousand men he is able to meet one who is coming against him with twenty thousand?
32 Vermag er es nicht, so schickt er, solange jener noch fern ist, eine Botschaft ab und bittet um Friedensbedingungen.
And if he cannot, then, while the other is still at a distance, he sends envoys and asks for terms of peace.
33 So kann denn keiner unter euch mein Jünger sein, der nicht all seiner Habe entsagt.
And so with everyone of you who does not bid farewell to all you have – you cannot be a disciple of mine.
34 Das Salz ist etwas Gutes. Wenn aber sogar das Salz die Kraft verlieren würde, womit soll man es würzen?
Yes, salt is good; but, if the salt itself should lose its strength, what will be used to season it?
35 Es ist weder für den Boden noch für den Düngerhaufen brauchbar; man wirft es eben weg. Wer Ohren hat zu hören, höre!"
It is not fit either for the land or for the manure heap. People throw it away. Let those who have ears to hear with hear!’
