Sálmarnir 33

1 Gleðjist og fagnið fyrir Drottni, þið hans trúuðu, því að lofsöngur hæfir réttlátum!

Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous. Praise is fitting for the upright.

2 Leikið af þrótti á alls konar hljóðfæri og lofið Drottin.

Give thanks to the LORD with the lyre. Sing praises to him with the harp of ten strings.

3 Lofsyngið honum með nýjum söngvum. Sláið strengina ákaft og hrópið fagnaðaróp!

Sing to him a new song. Play skillfully with a shout of joy.

4 Því að orð Drottins er áreiðanlegt – því má treysta. Öll hans verk eru í trúfesti gjörð.

For the word of the LORD is right. All his work is done in faithfulness.

5 Hann elskar allt sem rétt er og gott, kærleikur hans umvefur heiminn.

He loves righteousness and justice. The earth is full of the loving kindness of the LORD.

6 Það var orð Drottins sem skapaði himininn og alla hans stjörnumergð.

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made; and all their host by the breath of his mouth.

7 Og höfunum safnaði hann saman og bjó þeim sinn rétta stað.

He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap. He lays up the deeps in storehouses.

8 Allir heimsbúar – bæði háir og lágir – óttist Drottin, og nálgist hann með lotningu.

Let all the earth fear the LORD. Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.

9 Því að hann talaði og þá stóð heimurinn þar! Orð hans hljómaði og veröldin varð til!

For he spoke, and it was done. He commanded, and it stood firm.

10 Drottinn ónýtir áform þjóða sem gegn honum rísa

The LORD nullifies the counsel of the nations. He makes the thoughts of the peoples to be of no effect.

11 en fyrirætlanir hans standa að eilífu, frá kynslóð til kynslóðar.

The counsel of the LORD stands fast forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

12 Sæl er sú þjóð sem á Drottin að Guði, það fólk sem hann hefur kosið eignarlýð sinn.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.

13 Drottinn lítur niður af himni,

The LORD looks from heaven. He sees all the descendants of Adam.

14 horfir á mannanna börn.

From the place of his habitation he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth,

15 Hann hefur myndað hjörtu þeirra og gefur gætur að öllum athöfnum þeirra.

he who fashions all of their hearts; and he considers all of their works.

16 Velbúinn her tryggir konungi ekki sigur og ofurafl eitt stoðar lítið.

There is no king saved by the multitude of an army. A mighty man is not delivered by great strength.

17 Stríðshestur er ekki til að reiða sig á, styrkur hans einn frelsar engan.

A horse is a vain thing for safety, neither does he deliver any by his great power.

18 En, – augu Drottins vaka yfir þeim sem óttast hann, þeim sem reiða sig á elsku hans.

Look, the LORD's eye is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his loving kindness;

19 Hann frelsar þá frá dauða, varðveitir líf þeirra á neyðarstund.

to deliver their soul from death, to keep them alive in famine.

20 Ég hef sett traust mitt á Drottin. Enginn getur hjálpað nema hann, hann er skjöldur og vígi!

Our soul waits for the LORD. He is our help and our shield.

21 Hans vegna gleðjumst við og fögnum. Hans heilaga nafni treystum við.

For our heart rejoices in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.

22 Miskunn þín Drottinn umvefji okkur. Við vonum á þig.

Let your loving kindness be on us, LORD, since we have hoped in you.
