1 he abhirucite kuriye, tvAM tava putrAMzca prati prAcIno'haM patraM likhAmi|

The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;

2 satyamatAd yuSmAsu mama premAsti kevalaM mama nahi kintu satyamatajJAnAM sarvveSAmeva| yataH satyamatam asmAsu tiSThatyanantakAlaM yAvaccAsmAsu sthAsyati| (aiōn g165)

For the truth's sake, which dwells in us, and shall be with us for ever. (aiōn g165)

3 piturIzvarAt tatpituH putrAt prabho ryIzukhrISTAcca prApyo 'nugrahaH kRpA zAntizca satyatApremabhyAM sArddhaM yuSmAn adhitiSThatu|

Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. (agape)

4 vayaM pitRto yAm AjJAM prAptavantastadanusAreNa tava kecid AtmajAH satyamatam Acarantyetasya pramANaM prApyAhaM bhRzam AnanditavAn|

I rejoiced greatly that I found of your children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

5 sAmprataJca he kuriye, navInAM kAJcid AjJAM na likhannaham Adito labdhAm AjJAM likhan tvAm idaM vinaye yad asmAbhiH parasparaM prema karttavyaM|

And now I plead to you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto you, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

6 aparaM premaitena prakAzate yad vayaM tasyAjJA Acarema| Adito yuSmAbhi ryA zrutA seyam AjJA sA ca yuSmAbhirAcaritavyA|

And this is love, (agape) that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as all of you have heard from the beginning, all of you should walk in it.

7 yato bahavaH pravaJcakA jagat pravizya yIzukhrISTo narAvatAro bhUtvAgata etat nAGgIkurvvanti sa eva pravaJcakaH khrISTArizcAsti|

For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

8 asmAkaM zramo yat paNDazramo na bhavet kintu sampUrNaM vetanamasmAbhi rlabhyeta tadarthaM svAnadhi sAvadhAnA bhavataH|

Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.

9 yaH kazcid vipathagAmI bhUtvA khrISTasya zikSAyAM na tiSThati sa IzvaraM na dhArayati khrISTasya zijJAyAM yastiSThati sa pitaraM putraJca dhArayati|

Whosoever trangresses, and abides not in the doctrine of Christ, has not God. He that abides in the doctrine of Christ, he has both the Father and the Son.

10 yaH kazcid yuSmatsannidhimAgacchan zikSAmenAM nAnayati sa yuSmAbhiH svavezmani na gRhyatAM tava maGgalaM bhUyAditi vAgapi tasmai na kathyatAM|

If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

11 yatastava maGgalaM bhUyAditi vAcaM yaH kazcit tasmai kathayati sa tasya duSkarmmaNAm aMzI bhavati|

For he that bids him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

12 yuSmAn prati mayA bahUni lekhitavyAni kintu patramasIbhyAM tat karttuM necchAmi, yato 'smAkam Anando yathA sampUrNo bhaviSyati tathA yuSmatsamIpamupasthAyAhaM sammukhIbhUya yuSmAbhiH sambhASiSya iti pratyAzA mamAste|

Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.

13 tavAbhirucitAyA bhaginyA bAlakAstvAM namaskAraM jJApayanti| Amen|

The children of your elect sister greet you. Amen.
