Ester 9

1 El decimotercer día del duodécimo mes, el mes de Adar, debía cumplirse la orden y el decreto del rey. Ese día los enemigos de los judíos pensaron que los aplastarían, pero sucedió exactamente lo contrario: los judíos aplastaron a sus enemigos.

Now in the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the month, when the king’s commandment and his decree came near to be put in execution, on the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to conquer them, (but it turned out that the opposite happened, that the Jews conquered those who hated them),

2 Los judíos se reunieron en sus ciudades por todas las provincias del rey Jerjes para atacar a los que querían destruirlos. Nadie podía oponerse a ellos, porque todos los demás pueblos les tenían miedo.

the Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus, to lay hands on those who wanted to harm them. No one could withstand them, because the fear of them had fallen on all the people.

3 Todos los funcionarios de las provincias, los jefes, los gobernadores y los funcionarios del rey ayudaron a los judíos, porque tenían miedo de Mardoqueo.

All the princes of the provinces, the local governors, the governors, and those who did the king’s business helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai had fallen on them.

4 Mardoqueo tenía mucho poder en el palacio real, y su reputación se extendía por las provincias a medida que aumentaba su poder.

For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces, for the man Mordecai grew greater and greater.

5 Los judíos atacaban a sus enemigos con espadas, matándolos y destruyéndolos, y hacían lo que querían con sus enemigos.

The Jews struck all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and with slaughter and destruction, and did what they wanted to those who hated them.

6 En la fortaleza de Susa, los judíos mataron y destruyeron a quinientos hombres.

In the citadel of Susa, the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men.

7 Entre ellos estaban Parsandata, Dalfón, Aspata,

They killed Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,

8 Porata, Adalia, Aridata,

Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha,

9 Parmasta, Arisai, Aridai y Vaizata,

Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vaizatha,

10 los diez hijos de Amán, hijo de Hamedata, el enemigo de los judíos, pero no tomaron sus posesiones.

the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jews’ enemy, but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.

11 Ese mismo día, cuando se informó al rey del número de los muertos en la fortaleza de Susa,

On that day, the number of those who were slain in the citadel of Susa was brought before the king.

12 éste dijo a la reina Ester: “Los judíos han matado y destruido a quinientos hombres en la fortaleza de Susa, incluidos los diez hijos de Amán. ¡Imagina lo que han hecho en el resto de las provincias reales! Ahora, ¿qué es lo que quieres pedir? Se te dará. ¿Qué más quieres? Se te concederá”.

The king said to Esther the queen, “The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in the citadel of Susa, including the ten sons of Haman; what then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now what is your petition? It shall be granted you. What is your further request? It shall be done.”

13 “Si le place a Su Majestad”, respondió Ester, “permita que los judíos de Susa hagan mañana lo mismo que han hecho hoy, siguiendo el decreto. Además, que los diez hijos de Amán sean empalados en postes”.

Then Esther said, “If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews who are in Susa to do tomorrow also according to today’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows.”

14 El rey ordenó que se hiciera esto. Se emitió un decreto en Susa, y empalaron los cuerpos de los diez hijos de Amán.

The king commanded this to be done. A decree was given out in Susa; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.

15 El día catorce del mes de Adar, los judíos de Susa volvieron a reunirse y mataron allí a trescientos hombres, pero de nuevo no tomaron sus posesiones.

The Jews who were in Susa gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and killed three hundred men in Susa; but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.

16 Los demás judíos de las provincias del rey también se reunieron para defenderse y librarse de sus enemigos. Mataron a setenta y cinco mil que los odiaban, pero no tocaron sus posesiones.

The other Jews who were in the king’s provinces gathered themselves together, defended their lives, had rest from their enemies, and killed seventy-five thousand of those who hated them; but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.

17 Esto sucedió el día trece del mes de Adar, y el día catorce descansaron y lo convirtieron en un día de fiesta y celebración.

This was done on the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of that month they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

18 Sin embargo, los judíos de Susa se habían reunido para luchar los días trece y catorce del mes. Así que descansaron el día quince, y lo convirtieron en un día de fiesta y celebración.

But the Jews who were in Susa assembled together on the thirteenth and on the fourteenth days of the month; and on the fifteenth day of that month, they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

19 Hasta el día de hoy, los judíos rurales que viven en las aldeas observan el decimocuarto día del mes de Adar como un día de celebración y fiesta, un día festivo en el que se envían regalos unos a otros.

Therefore the Judeans of the villages, who live in the unwalled towns, make the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, a holiday, and a day of sending presents of food to one another.

20 Mardoqueo registró estos sucesos y envió cartas a todos los judíos de las provincias gobernadas por el rey Jerjes, cerca y lejos,

Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus, both near and far,

21 exigiéndoles que celebraran todos los años los días catorce y quince del mes de Adar

to enjoin them that they should keep the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month Adar yearly,

22 como el momento en que los judíos descansaban de su victoria sobre sus enemigos, y como el mes en que su tristeza se convertía en alegría y su luto en un tiempo de celebración. Les escribió que observaran los días como días de fiesta y alegría y que se dieran regalos de comida unos a otros y regalos a los pobres.

as the days in which the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned to them from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and of sending presents of food to one another, and gifts to the needy.

23 Los judíos acordaron continuar con lo que ya habían comenzado a hacer, siguiendo lo que Mardoqueo les había escrito.

The Jews accepted the custom that they had begun, as Mordecai had written to them,

24 Porque Amán, hijo de Hamedata, el agagueo, enemigo de todos los judíos, había tramado destruir a los judíos, y había echado “pur” (es decir, una “suerte”) para aplastarlos y destruirlos.

because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast “Pur”, that is the lot, to consume them and to destroy them;

25 Pero cuando llegó a conocimiento del rey, éste envió cartas ordenando que el malvado plan que Amán había planeado contra los judíos recayera sobre él, y que él y sus hijos fueran empalados en postes.

but when this became known to the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked plan, which he had planned against the Jews, should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

26 (Por eso estos días se llaman Purim, de la palabra Pur.) Como resultado de todas las instrucciones de la carta de Mardoqueo, y de lo que habían visto, y de lo que les había sucedido,

Therefore they called these days “Purim”, from the word “Pur.” Therefore because of all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and that which had come to them,

27 los judíos se comprometieron a adoptar la práctica de que ellos y sus descendientes, y todos los que se unieran a ellos, no se olvidaran de celebrar estos dos días tal como se había establecido, y en el momento adecuado cada año.

the Jews established and imposed on themselves, on their descendants, and on all those who joined themselves to them, so that it should not fail that they would keep these two days according to what was written and according to its appointed time every year;

28 Estos días debían ser recordados y celebrados por cada generación, familia, provincia y ciudad, para que estos días de Purim fueran siempre observados entre los judíos y no fueran olvidados por sus descendientes.

and that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from amongst the Jews, nor their memory perish from their offspring.

29 Entonces la reina Ester, hija de Abihail, escribió una carta, junto con Mardoqueo el judío, dando en su carta plena autoridad a la carta de Mardoqueo sobre Purim.

Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew wrote with all authority to confirm this second letter of Purim.

30 También se enviaron cartas expresando paz y tranquilidad a todos los judíos de las 127 provincias del imperio del rey Jerjes.

He sent letters to all the Jews in the hundred and twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus with words of peace and truth,

31 Establecieron estos días de Purim en su momento, tal como lo habían ordenado Mardoqueo el judío y la reina Ester, comprometiéndose ellos y sus descendientes a los tiempos de ayuno y luto.

to confirm these days of Purim in their appointed times, as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had decreed, and as they had imposed upon themselves and their descendants in the matter of the fastings and their mourning.

32 De este modo, el decreto de Ester confirmó estas prácticas relativas a Purim, que se inscribieron en el registro oficial.

The commandment of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.
